from an embedded form on a website, can I force a password prior to displaying the form?

Yes it is possible, but someone that knows the code could still get around that, so depending on the level of protection that you are looking for, this might be a good approach and might not.
Please take a look at this forum thread Password protect survey jotform and let us know if that is what you were after.

Hey Ben, your instructions are not very clear. I finally figured it out but the fact you have to go the embed menu and ultimately select "multiple fields" to show based on input, was not at all clear. When you put these help things together, be specific.
But, I got it to work which was clear.
