Can I combine multiple questions points in the same result in a report?

    I'm considering purchasing your product to support my training and surveying needs. Before I do that, however, I'm trying to find out whether JotForm would work for my purposes, so it's urgent (please) to receive a response.

    Specifically, I am designing an image survey including multiple questions per "category." I would like to be able to automatically generate reports with the results per category rather than per question. So, for example, see below a dummy set of questions:


    Item 1: I like colors

    Item 2: I like colorful things

    Item 3: Colors are important to me

    Item 4: I prefer to buy things that are colorful

    What I need in the REPORT: The AVERAGE score in the COLORS Category for items 1 through 4.

    I suppose I could program that into the Excel spreadsheet but I'm not sure how to integrate the two.  Any ideas will be much appreciated.

    Hi Cris,

    Based on what you have mentioned, yes, you can do that. In case I did not understood you properly I have created a quick sample to demonstrate what I had understood.

    Ben, I think this is just what I needed! Now I have to figure out how you did it.  Then, in the report, can I enter the actual calculation?

    The issue is that in many assessments what we're really measuring are not individual questions but categories.  For instance, in the employee engagement assessment I'm creating, the categories could be "meaningfulness" "safety," and "availability of resources."  Each of those categories includes at least 6 questions.  What I need in the report is the average (or the sum, either works - average if possible is best) for the categories.  In other words:


    Ben Doe

    Meaningfulness score: X

    Safety score: Y

    Availability score: Z


    If it were possible to, at the same time, enter somewhere the average obtained from previous participants that would be unbelievably cool - but I don't think that would be possible?

    Am I interpreting your response correctly?

    By the way, if you'd like to make this question (and your answer) public it's fine with me - I just wasn't sure when I asked the question.  It's not a private question, really, and it could be useful to others.

    I have been trying to figure out how to make the report based on categories not individual question, the problem I see is that a visual report is based on these type of fields:

    - Drop Down

    - Radio Button

    - Check Box

    - Star Rating

    - Scale Rating

    - Grading

    - Slider

    So that means that the calculation widget will not be part of it. If you want to we can proceed requesting to have the option to measure reports based on categories as well, however it might not be approved, and there is no estimated time for the implementation if it is approved.

    Hi David,

    Oh, I'm sorry to hear that - I thought you guys had magically solved my problem :).  Yes, please do proceed requesting that feature. Ok, so now I have two follow up questions:

    1. This may be a weird question but... it's not possible to pre-customize the Excel report we generate when we click on "excel," is there? Any tips or resources will be much appreciated (even if those tips/resources have to do with how to customize the excel spreadsheet after I open it)

    2. Is it possible for a report to automatically calculate the average in a given question for all people who completed the assessment and display that average next to the person's answer? Not sure if this question is making sense. See below what I had in mind:



    Response to question x: 6

    Average of all respondents to question x: 5

    Standard deviation of for question x: 1

    (this would tell David that he is one standard deviation above the average)

    I have a feeling this is not possible, but I thought I'd ask...

    Hi Cris,

    Since we can only reply to one question per thread I have moved your question about Excel customization to a new thread here:

    Now I am wondering. When you say report, do you mean report such as our various Reports, one of which was already mentioned by my colleague David above, or do you mean it as next:

    1 - remove all questions
    2 - remove all answers
    3 - display only scores they got?

    If that is what you want, then there is a way how we could do this in our submissions panel (same can be done for emails).

    We can select what can be shown to us and what fields we want to have downloaded.

    I will take the jotform I pasted the link above and will slightly change it to accommodate the above.

    Hi Ben,

    I meant one of the reports you issue. Thank you so much for trying this out! Here's what I meant. you know when you take an assessment on - hum, say personality - then you want to know whether your personality scores are higher or lower than everyone else's? So my "dream report" (which, mind you, I have a strong feeling I can't get with jot forms, I'm "just askin...") would have something like this:

    Cris Extraversion Score: 60

    (that extraversion score would be the result of adding up or averaging a number of "extraversion related" questions, for example "I am sociable," "I love working with other people," and "I prefer talking to listening.")

    Average of everyone else's extraversion score: 50 (everyone else means everyone who completed the survey before Cris)

    Standard deviation of everyone in the sun's answers in extraversion: 10

    Cris' extraversion percentile: 60th (meaning, 60% of the population is lower than Cris in extraversion).

    If ever something like this could be accomplished by ANY survey provider - I don't care which - I would be grateful forever... no one does this.

    Hello Cris,

    Unfortunately we do not have such feature. It seems your requirement needs to take average of one particular question of all other submissions of you have received in your form. It is currently not possible to get the data of previous submissions of your form. 

    On possibility I can think of is to export your submission data in your database and the write a SQL query to generate a report with your own calculation.
