What type of field would you suggest for a promo code. I tried a number only field with a minimum and maximum value but if the person does not put in the correct value it shows them what it should be. What would be great is to have specific numbers or letters that were valid. (this would be more than one value that is valid)

You can add a promo or coupon code directly to the payment section of your form:

You just need to click on the Payment tool, run the payment wizard by clicking the "Wand" icon:
You have to add your product items before you can configure the coupon codes.
