I would like to add a field to my form that allows simple html formatting of text. Just like the field I am typing in now. Probably easy, but I just can't seem to figure it out!

Unfortunately, there is no such feature on JotForm. I added this to our feature requests list. So, we will see if we can implement this.

Is WYSIWYG text area not available yet?
- allanftdAnswered on August 29, 2011 at 03:04 PM
Thanks for following up. Yes, it is now available in JotForm! You can now insert WYSIWIG text areas within your form using the Free Text (HTML) Field. Basic HTML tags for formatting and inserting content like images are allowed. Some tags that are not allowed are <script> and <iframe> tags for security purposes.
You can find the Free Text (HTML) field under Power Tools menu as shown below:

The Free Text (HTML) box is not WYSIWYG. I put in three spaces before a sentence and it only puts in one. I put in a blank line between two lines of text and I press the complete button and it just pushes all the lines together. This is so frustrating. Could you please add an actual WYSIWYG editor. It would also be nice if there were bullets or lists available.
I can't believe I spent 40 minutes trying to get Free Text to have the correct spacing, and it still doesn't work. Even creating this paragraph automatically created a blank line. Sure it makes it look nice to you guys, but maybe I don't want an extra blank line. I'm just sitting here shaking my head.

I've tried it in both modes. It doesn't work in either of them.

Switching to HTML Mode is different from the default one, you have to use HTML codes in order your sentence format to work. Have you tried using (blank space html code) and <br> (New Line HTML Code) in your sentence? If so, please try using that code and update us how its going with your form. Thank you for your patience and have a great day!~idarktech

I was afraid you were going to suggest that. Why should I have to work for the technology? Shouldn't the technology be working for me? You don't have to answer this. Your product is the only product I've used that makes me use these "behind the scenes" code. It's just not going to happen.

Sorry about that, we understand your part. To be honest that is the only workaround I could share, switching HTML Mode is another way of customizing your styles which is more effective than the Visual One. We can't force you to use every workaround we have, infact we are very thankful to those who share there ideas and comments about JotForm.
Again, sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience.

Your problem has to do with how HTML works, not how jotForms works. You need to have the non-breaking spaces to have multiple spaces. You can also use Shift+Space to insert a non-breaking space.

We have released Rich "WYSIWYG" Editor for text-area field. You can enable it under Text area field's properties toolbar or Text Area field's Properties.
