How can I change the background color of a field when is selected?

hello, i am having an issue with a background color around something selected. 

my main background is black, and i have white font. when something is selected that back ground around that field turns white until you go to the next field. if the field is required the white box around it stays white even when going to the next field. 

so my question is, can i change the color around the field that is selected?
