On Multi-Page Forms: Is it possible to add an Autosave/Save button feature when editing submissions in the View Submissions interface?

Asked by UQCC on February 21, 2015 at 03:46 PM

    Hi,

I'm a new migrant from Forms central.

Firstly - congratulations on the migration tool from FC. It worked a lot better than expected (though it took a few days to complete).

I'm trying to get to grips with Jotforms. I expected differences - both positive and negative. I miss some things in FC, but am also excited as to new functions of JF.

One thing I'm finding odd is editing hidden fields. Basically I'm using them similarly to most people - as a way of storing extra information about individual entries. Please let me know if I'm doing the wrong thing in the following method....

    1. I've added a number of hidden fields to a large form.

    2. I've gone to submissions, clicked on an entry and clicked on the edit button. I then see the hidden fields for the selected entry and can edit them.

    3. Problem: To save the edits, I seem to have to jump through all the pages on the form until I get to the submit button, and then I seem to have to press submit to save the changes. This is very inefficient. I'd have expected either immediate autosaving, or a separate toolbar button saying "save edits" (not just cancel edit).

    4. Problem: Using submit to change the form seems to send a submission notification to everyone on the submission receiving email list, and presumably also to the person who submitted it ?!?!  (even though they didn't edit the data). U want to just save the edits without hassle.

    Also

    5. Problem: The submissions "grid" showing the table of data doesn't seem to be able to be edited directly. It would be nice to have an "edit" button that would enable direct editing of grid fields, and also a cancel/save/save&exit button to get out of this mode. FC let you autoedit/autosave directly (a bit more dangerous) but also had a nice extra feature where a light grey cell background was added to any manually edited cell to show it wasn't original submitted data but was edited by the admin.

So there are my issues. Is there a way I can admin edit entry fields without resubmitting the form?

    Thanks

    M

Thank you for the information you have provided. I am glad that you found some of the features that we have provided amusing and we really appreciate the time out you took to provide ideas that could make your stay here at Jotform a lot better. We listen to our users and we try to develop features to make editing and form building a lot easier form them.

I've gone to submissions, clicked on an entry and clicked on the edit button. I then see the hidden fields for the selected entry and can edit them.

When you view your forms in the View Submission interface, you will have access to hidden fields. Do bare in mind that these fields are not displayed publicly on your form.

Currently, there is no save button available in the View Submission interface, it is required that the form is being resubmitted to save the changes made. There are no autosave feature available at the moment as well.

Problem: Using submit to change the form seems to send a submission notification to everyone on the submission receiving email list, and presumably also to the person who submitted it ?!?!  (even though they didn't edit the data). U want to just save the edits without hassle.

When a form is resubmitted, a notification is being sent to the Notification configuration (for admin) and not the Auto Responders which are sent to the customer/form users. Auto Responder notifications are only sent when the form is submitted for the first time.

This is correct, you are not able to do direct editing in the data grid shown in the View Submission interface. You would definitely have to re-submit the form for changes to be saved.

I have taken note of all that you have provided and I have opened a ticket to our developer so that they can look at the features that you were accustom to and implement something similar if not better to make your stay here more efficient. I would like to take the time out to thank you once more for providing this information. I am sure our development team will look into its implementation. We will be in touch.

    Cheers!

Thanks for the repsonse. Good to know that resubmitting doesn't send emails to the original submitter.

As a work around I'm thinking of adding an extra (hidden) submit button to my section of hidden fields, so I don't have to scroll through all the pages when I make a change (if it'll let me).

    Thanks

Yes it is possible to add more than one submit button, let us know how it goes.

I could add the second submit, but I couldn't make it hidden.

So I managed a work-around. I added a hidden checkbox where it was checked to true by default. I then made the appearance of the second submit button conditional on this being unchecked.

This resulted in the second submit button not being visible in the original form that was submitted, but when I uncheck the hidden checkbox that I have in the area of my form where I keep all the hidden fields, then this second submit button also in this area of hidden fields appears, and I can keep using it to submit changes to hidden fields. If I want (for some reason) to hide this second submit button, I can re-check the box and scroll through all the pages to resubmit it - but it is unlikely that I'll need to do this.

Looks like I now have a way to avoid scrolling through all the pages to resubmit.

Hope the explanation makes sense to anyone who needs it.

Thank you for the update on this situation. I am glad that you came up with that impressive work around - this is very creative.

I have made some adjustments to your original post so that we can address each of the issues identified separately. Please note that all updates will be provided to each thread specifically. If you ever feel the need to provide additional information about any of the points mentioned in your original thread, please ensure that the post is made on the thread created for that specific issue.

Here are the threads for the inquiries you mentioned in the original post that has been moved:

How is it that I am seeing hidden fields when editing the form in the View Submissions interface?

Feature Request: Is it possible for you to add a direct edit feature for the Data Grid in the View Submissions interface?

When I edit a form in the View Submissions interface and re-submit does it send a notification to both Notifiers and Auto Responders?

If you have a new issue, feel free to open a separate thread and we will have it addressed there. Again, I am glad that you came up with that creative work around and I hope that the Save button feature you requested in this thread is being implemented soon. We will be in touch.

    Cheers!
