How do you "unapply" or remove a theme?

Seems every time I play with the themes, parts of the theme design stick with the form and cannot be removed. I've deleted the css, set colors, widths, etc. but certain elements refuse to re-set. Especially background colors and background images. I cannot get a transparent background once a theme has been applied.

What's the proper way to remove a theme?

One way to do this would be using your form's revision history that can help you to bring back your form to a previous state (before the theme was applied, for example).
