Why is it so hard to line up fields in columns?

JotForms is powerful, lots of nice features.  However it's difficult to move fields around without it doing all sorts of crazy moves on other fields.

I'm new and came over from Adobe Forms Central.  It was much easier to line fields up in columns and rows.

Any tips for making the design process smoother.
