Right margin is suddenly cut off when getting PDF over Get PDF option in View Submission page

Asked by TBtrucking on June 17, 2015 at 04:44 PM

    Hi,

I have a form that we've been using for the past few months with no issues.  This morning, I went in to print a submission and noticed that the view within Jotform was cutting off text on the right side of the page.  Same happens when I save to PDF.

I'm not sure what happened because this is the first time we've had an issue and I hadn't made any changes to the form in a few months.

Here is the form link:  http://form.jotformpro.com/form/50956576283972.  The text isn't cut off in that view, just within Jotform and when I try to save a pdf.

I appreciate any help you can provide!

    Thanks!!!

I was also able to see the cut-off text in the PDF form when I used the GET PDF form http://form.jotformpro.com/form/50956576283972

BUT so far not when PRINTING the Submission data within the Form Builder.

Can you share to us also a screenshot of the cut-off text in the PRINT version on your end?

If yous still have a copy of the PDF file that you were able to generate before using the GET PDF option in the submission page, please share to us the PDF file so we can compare it to the current PDF file being generated now that have the issue.

This is the PDF file that I was able to generate currently.

I just need to check for further details so that I can submit a bug ticket report to our next level support regarding this finding.

    Thanks

    Hi,

    Thanks for the quick response!

I'm actually not sure how you print the submission within the form builder.  I have a print option next to 'Get PDF' in the Submissions area, but it just prints the entire webpage.

The only thing I did was generate a PDF (which looks exactly like the one you sent), then print the pdf, so it looks exactly like the pdf you sent whether in pdf or paper form.

Did you want me to scan in the paper copy I printed from the pdf to show the cut off margins?

    Thanks!

I'm actually not sure how you print the submission within the form builder.  I have a print option next to 'Get PDF' in the Submissions area, but it just prints the entire webpage.

I also used the 'PRINT' option in the Submission page (option next to 'Get PDF'). You can see on the animated screen below while I do it.

The 'Get PDF' option indeed is not working on your form http://form.jotformpro.com/form/50956576283972, specifically on the right-side margin. I was able to reproduced this problem even previously.

As I mentioned this is the PDF FIle I was able to generate using the 'Get PDF'option on your form. You can open this PDF File and you will see the problem.

I was hoping you still have a copy of the previous PDF file that doesn't have the problem, which you mentioned was working fine before (doesn't have cut margins). Do you still have a copy?

    Thanks.

    Hi,

Yes, I do still have a copy of that.  Here's a screenshot of the right margin.  I can also provide you with a copy of what it looks like when I click the print button and print to pdf from there.  It literally takes a snapshot of the active window - just what is currently showing on the screen.  For that, since this thread is public, I'd rather email it to you to make sure no confidential information can be seen.

Let me know if there is anything else you need from me - thanks!!

Update to print button info:  I tried the print option in Chrome instead of IE and it didn't cut off the margin, however, when I print a paper copy from the pdf I saved, it prints landscape.

From what you have mentioned, it seems that the issue is with the Internet Explorer. I would suggest using Firefox or Chrome as they are both much safer and more standards compatible than IE.

In regards to the Landscape and Portrait, this should be an option that you have available while printing in the app that you are using to print it out.

Some applications do however hide that so that they have a cleaner design so the Print just issues print, but in such cases you have some other option like Print Preview, Page Setup, Print.. etc depending on the implementation.

In either case, they must offer you to setup the paper size and the orientation - please also make sure that the paper size is not larger than what your printer can accept, since if you have a smart printer, it might try to find the best way to print it out so that there are no cut offs - causing the orientation to change as well.

    Hi,

Overall, I don't think the browser is the issue.  I've been using IE without issue until yesterday when the right margin got weird.  Regardless of what browser I use (Chrome or IE), when I look at the submission in Jotform the right margin is cut off whether I proceed to print with the print icon or Get PDF icon, so it seems to be starting within the application and carrying through to saving as a pdf or printing.  The support person I was working with yesterday noticed that when you do use the print icon it will pull in the full form.

I just noticed that that is an image.

Please do try to inject the following CSS code to your jotform:

    img.form-image {
        max-width: 100% !important;
    }

Do let us know how it works after that.

Unfortunately that didn't work.  The margin issue continues down the page even when an uploaded image isn't involved.

No, that is not what I meant. I meant that the text you took a screenshot of is the image itself, which is a very big image as well - and as such it does that.

This is the link to your image:

    ( 1538 x 552 pixels )

If you changed your form to hold that as a text inside of the Text element you could set it up to look just as on image while not break the layout of the PDF when exported.

I will however raise this to our developers to inspect and possibly fix so that it does not happen. As soon as there are any updated on this, you will be updated about it through this thread.

    Hi,

I am still getting a cutoff right margin on my form and I can't use the PDF option in Jotform.  Would you be able to take another look for me?  Let me know if you need any new screen shots, etc.

    Thanks,

I believe the issue is being caused by the width of your matrix field.  Everything else seems to fit properly while printing and in the PDF copy.  Until we have the ability to edit the PDF output, the PDF will try to include the full width of the matrix field:

I would recommend making your matrix slimmer.

All the images and text from your form do appear to fit now.

    Hello Sarah,

Good news! I have implemented dynamic shrinking algorithm for tables and text so that the fields are correctly fit on PDF pages.

However, it might be much better if you divide your text/html fields (particularly the field after Consent to Request Consumer Report & Investigative Consumer Report Information) so that they are organized correctly onto pages while printing.

Please let me know your thoughts.

    All the best!

Thanks so much!  I'm not sure what you mean by dividing the text/html fields.  Can you help me understand that better?

    Thanks again!

Your message has reached my colleague Alp and I am sure that he would be happy to explain it further, but what I believe he wanted to say is to split the very wide elements of your form into 2 or more elements instead.

That way you would be able to print out the PDF without any issues.

I will however post a note to him to get back to you if that is not what he had meant.

    Hello,

Thank you for the explanation Ben, it is correct. There is one html/text field with extraordinary length -the one with a table in the end- which cannot be compressed to one page, so it gets divided over the table which results in an undesired display.

So taking the table out of this field, and placing on a new field, it will be displayed properly, without any cuts.

    Thank you!

    Best

This has been working very well, now - thank you!  One more odd thing has started happening, though.  When I do print the pdf, parts of the form are centering instead of being left justified.  It looks fine in the Submissions view, it just moves to centered when I save as a pdf.  This is mostly happening to text towards the bottom of the form.  Is that just some code I need to enter in?

    Thank you,

    Sarah

    Hello Sarah,

Images and texts are center aligned in PDF by default, unless it is specified in the form. To fix this, please adjust respective fields' alignment in the form builder.

    Kind regards

    Hi,

I did that, but it didn't make a difference.  All fields and text are left aligned in the form?

Not sure if you are getting the same PDF that I am but I am having trouble checking it due to the images being very distorted:

I tried creating the PDF a few times and it showed like this each time.  Is this the same thing happening to yours?

It's not - That's a new one to me!  Here's a sample of a pdf that I generated with the text centered:

My apologies, I was creating a PDF of the form, not of the submissions.  I do see what you mean:

The left side is the PDF of the submissions and the right side is the submission itself.  Where the PDF has the text centered, the submission view does not.
