Since introducing the Designer we have experienced nothing but problems with your software. It used to be excellent, now at times it is completely unusable. For example fields like Full Name and Phone Number end up on two lines because the boxes stretch to full width of form so we are forced to create our own boxes.
Today when we go into the Designer a field we don't want is showing automatically at the top:

When we try to make any change it makes no difference and it is impossible to go back to the Builder.
Real shame because we have recommended Jotform to a number of people.
If you have a theme applied to your form, there will unfortunately be some odd interactions with the designer. Since the CSS added by the theme usually trumps the CSS added by the designer, changes made in the designer may not always take hold. If the theme sets your field widths to 100%, the fields will stretch the full width of the form, even if you adjust them in the designer.
If there is ever anything specific you need help changing though, we can always help you to get things right. Let us know the form you are working on and what you would like changed and we will be happy to assist you.

I am not using a theme, every time I create a form I start with a blank canvass and simply drag the form tools etc over from the left. The problems start as soon as I enter the Designer to make changes to font colour, font face, font size, form width etc, then when I return to the builder (though this has not been possible today) everything has been stretched to full width and double fields have ended up on two lines.
That is very odd. Make sure you are logged in to your registered account when making changes to the form. You are currently posting from a Guest account so I wanted to make sure you were making changes while logged in. If you wouldn't mind letting us know the form you are working with, we can take a look to see what is happening when opened in the designer. As I said before, if there are any specific changes you need made, just let us know and we will be happy to help.

Also note that after a while, you might get logged out automatically, (an in built security feature)

I always log in to an account prior to making any changes/creating a new form. Having just logged in to this particular account again today once again I am not seeing the form I have created (the header has appeared again) and when I try to exit back to the Builder I am unable to. Any saved changes are not showing.
We have experienced problems since the introduction of the Designer, everything worked just fine before that.
You can actually design your form without the form designer - the old default themes are still available, and you can style things further using Custom CSS.
What we would like to do is take a copy of your form, run it through the Form designer and identify what the problem might be.
At the same time, we can help design your form exactly as you would like it to look (which is what I imagine you are currently trying to do)
