if i reply to a submission, i know they get it (bc i tested it on myself)....do I get a copy of the reply? if so, where is it? if not, then what good does it really do to have this option? (esp since there is no record). thanks!

I am not quite sure exactly what you mean?
I will take a guess:
Are you replying to notifications sent by email@example.com ? If you reply to these email, its effectively goes down a black hole.
If you wish to respond to someone who has submitted a form, you are going to need to retrieve their email address from your notification email, and send your reply to that address.
You can still reply to actual notification email, just remember to change the firstname.lastname@example.org to whatever the users email address is.
Hopefully I have understood your query correctly, if not, please try again explaining what your trying to do, and where it seems to be going wrong.
