I currently have a sub account under someone else. I'd like to create my own paid account using my work email but because that email address is associated with the sub-account I am unable to establish my own. Please advise on how to proceed.

Simply ask the main account owner to delete your account, then do login and go to the pricing page to upgrade it. You can also update the email address from the Account details page.
Otherwise, by simply creating a new user with the email address of your preference and then upgrading it later on would be fine.
