Date Field Formatting

I did see older posts that had questions regarding the date field, but wasn't sure if something else has changed, since some of the posts were from 2012. My question is: is there a way to format the date field so that it will accept other methods of separation, such as a / instead of - ?
I have put information in a hover text with an example of how to fill the form out, but this is causing considerable confusion for our members (which some are not computer savvy) in completing forms. We switched over from AdobeFormsCentral and didn't have the issue with their formatting, so I'm hoping there might be something else we can do with our forms now. This is primarily impacting the date of birth (date) field.

Both the DateTime field and Date Picker (formerly Birth Date field) have option to use different separator.
