Paypal standard checkout: Recurring payment or subscriptions requires buyers to signup a Paypal account

Asked by jimchicago on September 01, 2015 at 01:43 PM

I am a paid member of JotForm and have used it to create a form on this page. The form asks the user to choose one of five possible membership options, each with a different annual fee.

In JotForm's PayPal wizard I chose "Sell Subscriptions" so that the membership fee renews automatically each year. The PayPal account being used for this form is a Business account--and according to this PayPal FAQ page, its default setting should be "PayPal Account Optional."

The PayPal page that comes up after the user submits the form says, "You need a PayPal account for this purchase." How can I remove this requirement, so that the page includes (prominently):

    Don't have a PayPal account?
Use your credit card or bank account (where available). Continue

    Hi,

I was able to replicate the problem:

It requires the buyer to either log in to a Paypal account or create one.

I will forward this to our developers to have it checked and fixed. We will update you on this thread when this has been resolved.

    Apologies for the inconvenience.

Upon checking the bug report that I have submitted, I see that someone in our back end team is already assigned on it. Unfortunately, I'm unable to provide an estimated time to when this will be fixed, but rest assure that someone is already working on this, I will notify them regarding this follow up. We should hear from them directly when this has been resolved.

    Again, apologies for the inconvenience.

    Hi Jim,

Unfortunately, for PayPal Standard, the feature "PayPal Account Optional" is not available for subscription-type transactions. We are so sorry to say this, but it is a PayPal policy.

Alternatively, you may upgrade your PayPal account to Website Payments Pro and use our PayPal Pro integration instead to start accepting credit card payments for the subscriptions you offer.

You may also want to consider switching to Stripe payments.

If you have any other questions or concerns, or if you have suggestions on how we can improve JotForm, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Thanks for using JotForm and have a great day!

    Best,
    Neil
