Why do reports not show answers for Matrix rows?

Asked by ConciliumGroup on January 04, 2012 at 10:28 PM

    Hi There,

I am really enjoying using JotForm and learning a tremendous amount in the process. Now that I have got the hang of creating forms and publishing them, I am looking to your reporing feature to enhance the overall delivery.

I created a form which had a matrix question set and I noticed that when I looked at the report (Pie, bar, etc), the report only gave totals for the number of responses given in each of the column headings but did not separate this by row. It is the row where the measurement criteria is placed. Please see the screenshot for Matrix questions sample.

When the report is generated, it will show the Matrix question title and then the number of responses for each of the columns (answer options - Good, average, Poor, etc), but does not show this for each of the rows. I know I will get this data in the .csv extraction but it would be nice to have it already in the report.

If the reporting function is not a priority feature, perhaps we could get data exportable to Excel in the matrix form (see screenshot - bottom matrix), where the totals appear in each cell. If we need to do any detailed reporting, calculations, we can then do this in Excel directly. (Just a thought).

Thank you for your thoughts on these things.

I will create a ticket adding your suggestions as I've seen some threads where such feature is requested. Our developers are still occupied with several tasks so please be patient with us. I myself would like to see JotForm being able to report matrix results in the manner that you described.

But please take note that such a task may require more developer hours as the use of a matrix is varied per user. In your case, you only have specific options selected(Extremely Important, Very Important, etc..) while for some, they may have a matrix of input fields which will most likely be dynamic in nature.

At the mean time, please consider using the Grid Reports(generated in the same way that you made your Visual Reports) as a temporary way to report data if you needed it embedded in your website's page. http://www.jotform.com/grid/20043802459

It may not show the totals like you wanted but at least, this is better than just the graphs earlier.

    Thank you for using JotForm

Wow, I just used this question on the most critical question on my annual business survey.  Didn't realize that I couldn't run reports on rows using a matrix question, and didn't even think to test it first.  Very disappointed, but eagerly awaiting this feature.

JotForm allows extending what it currently provides. It will require some JavaScript skills though.

In Reports, one of the options is RSS Listing which can be used by any programmer who knows how to parse XML. Here's a sample listing: http://www.jotform.com/rss/20044922450

Parsing XML and Java script skills are outta my league, but thanks for the suggestion nonetheless.

I'll see if I can somehow salvage the data by exporting it to Excel and using Excel's "count" functions.  I've not tried to export it to excel so I'm not sure what it looks like but seems worth a shot given I don't have any other options at the moment.
