hi tonyburkinshaw. randy here, a fellow JotForm user.

i found this user guide really helpful on How to Assign Calculation Value.

as for getting the total, we just add the calculation values selected on each dropdown menu using the Form Calculation (the Condition Wizard can also be used to update a textbox field). below's a simple example (the screencast is 80 seconds long) (fig. 2).

there are 3 questions and each has 3 options. their calculation values are the same (0,1,2,3). (fig. 1)

blank      - 0 (zero is added as the 1st calculation value in dropdowns)
    Option 1 - 1
    Option 2 - 2
    Option 3 - 3

the 1st part will show how to add the selected values and the 2nd part will show how to get the average.

    hope this helps.
