Can I use part of the Name field in Update/Calculate Field Value Condition

Can I use part of the Name field (e.g. Last or First) in the "Update/Calculate field's value" condition.

I like the combined Name field but it has restrictions e.g. you can't coax the Google Drive custom name to split it.  As we already have a lot of data for our form I was wondering if I could split the name into two hidden fields using the "Update/Calculate field's value" condition and do it that way.

However I can't find the syntax to do it?

    Hi Sheila,

Unfortunately, you cannot update a field with the First name value only using Full Name field. What you can do is to just separately add two text boxes for First Name and Last Name so you can get the value for each field.

hi Sheila. Randy here, a fellow JotForm user.

i agree with Christian that fields like the textbox or form calculation cannot extract and separate the content of the full name field.

however, there maybe a workaround. this is based on JotForm Support Wayne's (@abajan) solution on how to do just that - but the context used was within the email notifier / responder. in the trials i did, the only field that can actually do this within a live form itself is the unappreciated text field (which can be hidden / made invisible).

in the simple example below, i used a text field and entered this text to extract just the first name from the fullname field {fullName:first}.

and since this can be done to extract the first name and last name separately, they will both have separate cells inside Google Drive's Google Sheets - which hopefully addresses your problem.

btw, Wayne (abajan) reminds me of The Doctor in Star Trek Voyager :)

*** update: i just tried it. didn't work. sorry for the inconvenience.

    Hi Randy

Thank you so much for providing a workaround for Sheila, but unfortunately Text fields are not sent to Google Spreadsheets.

I would instead use the text-box fields for First and Last Name and then add some custom CSS code to make it look like Full name field.

You can test and clone the demo form:
