We have several dozen items that folks need to fill out when using our form. the check list widget is great but I want to k now if I can create conditions for individual items and make it easy for folks to follow. Specifically, if folk select an item in the widget, I need them to supply another value for that item (in my example, if they select an application, they may need to select a version). Can this be done or is it better handled by creating individual check box items and then creating logic for them?

Are you referring to this widget "Checklist widget"? Unfortunately, it seems like it is not possible to tie it on a conditional logic. But, you use the default check box item and redesign it similar to that widget using the Form Designer Tool or by using a custom CSS code.
However, I checked the following checkbox widgets and these are the ones that can work on the conditions:
http://widgets.jotform.com/widget/line_checkbox
http://widgets.jotform.com/widget/flat_checkbox
http://widgets.jotform.com/widget/minimal_checkbox
http://widgets.jotform.com/widget/square_checkbox
You can also check other check box items in the widgets page to see with one works for the conditional logic: http://widgets.jotform.com/search/checkbox. Make sure that you used "Contains" in the rule statement.
Here's an example form with the use of the Square Checkbox widget: https://form.jotform.com/53141817558964 with a conditional logic. Let us know if that will work.
