You can setup a subscription (recurring payment) in Braintree payment field by selecting Sell Subscription option.
If you are still having problem setting up subscription in your integration, can you provide us more details on the issue? If you can provide us a screenshot of the issue then that would be great. To add a screenshot in this thread, just follow the instruction provided in this article: How to add screenshots images to questions in support forum.

ok, it is working now. but it looks like people can only sign up for 1 plan at a time. what if they need to sign up for a number of plans?

You are correct, they can only sign up for one subscription per submission. They should, however, be able to sign up for multiple subscriptions by submitting the form multiple times.
