This only works when you don't have any numbers in your options text. I need to count the number of check boxes, but I also have numbers in the text of each option. When I calculation the field it seems to add up all the numbers in each option selected which isn't what I'm wanting to do.
Is there a different way to achieve this?

You can assign a value to checkboxes, radio butons, etc. Please follow this guide in order to properly setup a form with calculation values

To add on to our support manager's response - you can achieve something like this (counting checkboxes)

To do this, use the count() function in the Form Calculator widget with a checkbox or radio button field - see https://shots.jotform.com/titus/Screencast_07-53_07-01-2016.mp4
Cheers!
