How can I ensure conditions are running correctly?

I have a form with multiple conditions. If I go through on the form all in one go, the conditions work fine. However, if I select an item that results in a conditional question coming up, and then go back and change the previous item, it does not always adjust accordingly.

Is there a way to phrase the conditions to ensure they run smoothly even when answers are changed?

As a note, everything is done based on a drop down or selection, not text answers.

I think you are referring to the hidden fields data which is retained as soon as the rule is changed. If so, you can set the  Clear Hidden Field values to Clear On Being Hidden:

Preferences > Advanced Settings > Clear Hidden Field Values
