If I edit the published form, will I need to publish it again or will it update automatically?

Also can I send the form to publish but still do a sandbox test in background and if necessary edit the form?  Will I have to re-publish or will the changes automatically update eventhough it has been published?

As long as you are NOT using the full source code to embed the form:

When you use the full source code, it takes a snapshot of current form and gives you the code in that state.  It requires getting new code each times changes are made.

Any embedded forms will be updated automatically when changes are made to the form using any embed method other than the full source code.  Other publish methods do not need to be updated when changes are made.
