When registrant edits their submission via the link I inserted in the email Auto Responder, the calculation doesn't work

The TOTAL field in my form shows blank and the former calculation disappears even when the fields driving the calculation are not touched.  For example, if the person edited their phone number and resubmitted the form, the calculation ceases to function.

I believe this is because of the option "Wait for input before including the field in calculation" in your form calculation widget.

 

When the form is loaded in edit mode, the conditions and other settings like this is still implemented. The form is waiting for an input action coming from your user before doing this calculation. It would be best to disable this option for this case.
