If I understand correctly, you wanted to have a recurring payment in a form of Donation instead.
Logically it is not a Donation anymore if its recurring.. -- it is a recurring payment instead.
Please review our user guide on How-to-setup-a-recurring-payment-option
In the user guide, you can setup the subscription as a 'Donation' instead of 'Subscription'.
But the catch here is that the donated amount will be pre-defined or fixed amount. Meaning it will not be a manual input of amount.
Hope this help. Let us know if you need further help on this.

We need options to give any amount and have an option to continue giving monthly, quarterly or yearly amount for 1 to 12 payments. Many people with non-profit organizations need that option.

I apologize for the confusion. Actually it is now possible to have custom amount when using the Subscription type of payment in Payment tools.
So you can use Subscription as a Donation method instead.
I have explained the solution on this discussion thread about a similar thing
Here is demo form https://form.jotform.com/53497186273971?
As you can see there is sample Recurring Payment optoin on the form that actually work as Donation amounts.
Let us know if this still will not work for you.
