    Form is generating duplicated submissions

    How to prevent multiple submissions on forms when required fields are not filled?

    Hello,

    We have been receiving multiple submissions of our within the same second. We thought this may be due to users clicking submit multiple times while the form is submitting due to thinking it did not submit. After reading through multiple posts on this forum however, I see that JotForm does not allow multiple submissions due to hitting the submit button multiple times.

    After additional research, I believe the multiple forms are being submitted when the form kicks back when a required field has not been filled before hitting submit. The error message occurs, then when going back to the required text field and filling it and hitting submit again, it sends two submissions instead of one.

    Is there any way to prevent duplicate submissions after receiving the 'unfilled required field' error message?

    I would like to inform you that the forms will not be submitted if a required field is not filled. The form will only be submitted once all the required fields are filled (no errors) and the user hits the submit button.

    The only time you may get duplicate submissions is if the user is redirected to the Thank You page, and they refresh or reload the Thank You page.

    However, if your users did not refresh the Thank you page but you still get submissions, then clearing the Form Cache should refresh the form and prevent this issue from happening. Here's how: How to Clear Your Form Cache?

    Thank you for your quick response. I did clear the Form Cache as you suggested yet we are still receiving duplicate submissions within the same second so I do not believe that is the solution to our problem.

    From the test submissions we have done, we are not hitting refresh, just waiting for it to show the thank you screen and then closing the window, but it is still submitting duplicate submissions.

    From what we are able to tell on this end, this seems to only happen when a required field is not filled when pressing submit, and then going back to fill the empty required field.

    Are you seeing the error message that a field is not yet filled on a different page that you have to hit the back button of your browser to go back to the form to fill the unfilled fields?

    I have cloned your form and have clicked the submit button once every time I fill in a required field. This resulted to clicking the submit button many times as I have to fill every required field one by one.

    I checked the submission page of the form and I only got one submission.

    May we know if your form is embedded on a website? And if you're submitting it through that website?

    Also, would it be okay if we try to make a submission directly on your form to test it?

    Does this apply to all required fields on your form? Or does this only happen if a certain field is not filled?

    You can try to prevent multiple submission by setting form limits based on a unique question.

    Yes, it does take you to a new page for the error message and then you must go back. The error message doesn’t specify what is missing but we knew it was the 'work history' section as we were testing it.

    The form is not embedded on our website however we do have a redirect created to send people to the form on JotForm (www.ArnoldGroupHR.com/Reactivation) but it should be being submitted through JotForm because of this, not our website.

    You are welcome to try a submission on our form. Please be sure to indicate it is a 'JotForm Test' so we know it is a test and not a true applicant. 

    We are unsure if this applies to all required fields on the form, we have only tested it with the 'work history' section unfilled.

    We will need to reproduce the issue to be able to troubleshoot it.

    Unfortunately, I was not able to reproduce it on your form. The first step validation looks like this:

    If it fails for some reason, the form user might be redirected to the second - server side validation page (which you have mentioned).

    However, I am not able to get to the second step validation page on your form. The first steps validation worked just fine when I tested the form.

    Are you still able to reproduce it? What browser do you use? Which fields are not filled during your tests?

    We have not tried reproducing the duplicate submissions since last week but we have received duplicate submissions from actual applicants even today so we know the problem is still occurring. We used Internet Explorer on our test submissions that produced duplicates and the field that was not filled when the test duplications occurred was the required question "Have you previously worked for The Arnold Group." This question does have conditional formatting; we did not test any other required fields so I am unsure if other unfilled fields cause the duplication or not.

    We have submitted a bug report ticket to our developers to see if we can investigate this further.

    In the meantime, you may consider using an Unique Question option.

    It will allow only one submission per unique value.

    Thank you for your help. We did try setting the form limits based on a unique question but it had unforeseen issues we did not anticipate for our applicants so unfortunately this is not a workable solution for this particular form.

    I am including a screenshot of the error message we are seeing on our end as far as the unfilled required fields. Hopefully this helps in solving the problem. Thank you again for your help with this.

    I see, it seems like the duplicate submission tends to happen only on an old IE browser. May we know what version of IE you are using? If it is a very old version of IE like IE5 or IE6, then I believe you will encounter more problems on the form.

    I see that a bug report has already been forwarded to our developers to have it checked and fixed, we'll directly hear from them about this issue.

    We have been using the newest form of IE on our system. We had an applicant submit the form from one of our office computers who said she kept hitting the submit button thinking it did not go through and ended up submitting the form 23 times.

    I appreciate your continued help with this issue and look forward to a solution from the developers.

    I believe the newest should be Microsoft Edge? However, you are referring to the last IE version, that would be IE11.

    I'm testing a cloned form in my end and it seems like the widgets are also not loading properly, it might be related to the duplicate submissions. Here's a screenshot:

    Hello,

    We are still receiving duplicate submissions from this form. I am wondering if you have any additional information from the developers about this issue? 

    The concern is that we are using up our submission quota that we are paying for on duplicate submissions rather than unique submissions.

    We are sorry for the delay on this. We are having hard times trying to reproduce the duplication issue on our end, which is slowing down the troubleshooting in this case. The bug report is still under the investigation at this time.

    If you come close to your monthly submissions limit, please contact us so we will be able to reset the limit for you.

    We appreciate all your help on this form issue.

    We have come across another glitch in the form that may be related to the duplicate submission problems we have been seeing: On the "Mode of Transportation" question, the form has been erroring out if the 'Car Available' option is selected. After it errors, and we go back and select 'other' instead, the form submits with no problem.

    @thearnoldgroup,

    I have tested your form and I can see the "Incomplete Values" message shown when submitting the form, although the field is filled. 

    I do not think it causes the issue as I have tested on my end and I can see only one submission generated.
