Gloversville Community Walk
Did you know that Teddy Roosevelt, F.D.R., and Harpo Marx once walked the streets of Gloversville? See the same buildings and architecture that a young MGM Studio head Samuel Goldwyn once viewed in Downtown Gloversville! There are 10 historical places in Downtown Gloversville with local history markers. This walking tour would highlight the rich history and architectural styles behind those buildings and give discussion to the ones that will be reimagined with the New York State Downtown Revitalization Initiative grant. The current historical places are Palace Diner, 4 Corners, Schine Memorial Hall, Glove Theatre, former Gloversville High School, former City Hall, Trail Station Park, Bleecker Street Square, Gloversville Public Library (one of the few Andrew Carnagie libraries in upstate New York), Kingsboro Historic District. Four of those historic places will be revitalized and some revisioned with the $10 million DRI (Glove Theatre, former City Hall, Schine Memorial and Rail Station Park) along with other historically significant buildings in the city. Visit the past, learn how the glove and railroad industries impacted this city, and see the plans for the future that will update buildings but pay homage to Gloversville's rich history. Tours will be held each day on June 17 and June 18 at 11 a.m. and at 2 p.m. and will last about an hour and half each. The tours will be on city streets and sidewalks. Dress appropriately for the weather and for a lot of walking.
