  • 2016 SHPE Scholarship Application

  • The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers at Lockheed Martin Aeronautics (SHPE at LM Aero) seeks to empower the Hispanic community of Fort Worth to attain careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and excel as technical and professional leaders. In support of our vision, we offer scholarship opportunities for graduating high school students pursuing university degrees in the fields of STEM who model the attributes and values of a future SHPE leader. Since 2011, SHPE at LM Aero has distributed over 20 $1,000 scholarships to well deserving local area students, we hope you can be one of our next awardees!

    • Requirements and Eligibility  
    • The SHPE at LM Aero Scholarship is an achievement-based award that recognizes well-rounded graduating high school students in Tarrant county who have demonstrated academic excellence, service to the Hispanic community, as well as a commitment to diversity and inclusion. Special consideration will be given to applicants who are first-generation college students.  All applicants will be asked to submit the following:

      - A 650 to 750 word essay (see checklist below for topics)

      - Two letters of recommendation

      - Most recent ACT and/or SAT scores

      - Cumulative un-weighted grade point average (GPA) on a 4-point scale

      - Intended college of attendance

      - Intended field of study (must be a STEM field)

      - Information regarding leadership, extra-curricular, and volunteer activities

      - Information regarding awards and recognition

      Students who are selected for second round review will be asked to provide the following documents to the selection committee for verification (May through June):

      - Copies of ACT and/or SAT scores

      - Official High School Transcripts showing GPA

      - Copy of college acceptance letter

      Dependents of Lockheed Martin employees or members of the SHPE at LM Aero board of directors are not eligible for this scholarship.

    • Selection  
    • Once all applications have been received, the scholarship committee will begin the review process in which the applications are scored according to their academic strength, involvement in extra-curricular and community activities, involvement in the Hispanic community, and the quality of their essay. Strong applicants will exhibit the characteristics of a Lockheed Martin Full Spectrum Leader, this includes the ability to:

      - Shape the Future

      - Build Effective Relationships

      - Energize the Team

      - Model Personal excellence, Integrity and Accountability

      Extra weight will be given to applicants who participate in a high school SHPE Jr Chapter, or other organizations that promote participation of underrepresented groups in STEM.

      All applications must be submitted no later than March 14, 2016 (Midnight - Central Standard Time)

    • Award  
    • Scholarship award finalists will be notified between May and June to request copies of their official high school transcripts, ACT/SAT scores, and copies of their college acceptance letter. All finalists will be notified of their status once the official selection is made. Winners will be awarded at least a $1,000 scholarship towards their first semester at college, which will be paid directly to the university specified in their scholarship application. In addition, awardees will be invited to the Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Facility for the presentation of their scholarship.

    • Essay prompts, respond to one (650 to 750 words):

      1. How has your participation in SHPE Jr prepared you to become an engineer/scientist, and what will you do as a professional to cultivate the next generation of Hispanic engineers and scientist?

      2. Discuss the importance of cultural diversity within the fields of STEM, and describe steps you will take as a professional increase representation of Hispanics in STEM.
