  • Welcome to the Allegheny Mountain Institute and AMI Fellowship Program! Please read the instructions carefully and submit your application by February 19, 2017. In addition to this form, complete applications will include:

    • 3 professional references - Form to share with references available here
    • $50 application fee payable by credit card or check. Checks should be written and mailed to: Allegheny Mountain Institute, P.O. Box 542 Staunton, VA 24402. The application fee may be waived for U.S. military veterans, individuals participating in service corps positions with proof of service, or other extenuating circumstances.

    Only complete applications will be reviewed. Please be prepared to complete this form in one sitting. You will not be able to save and return to change or adjust your answers.

    Applicants must be physically fit, able to lift 50 pounds, walk distances up and down steep hills, work outdoors for extended periods of the day, and be comfortable living and working communally as a team in a remote, mountain setting.

  • Based on your personal life experiences thus far, please answer the following questions using specific and concrete examples.


  • Make the case for your fellowship. Tell us why we should choose you. Take the time to think about your statement, and provide sincere and candid answers that will enable us to understand why you are interested in the AMI Fellowship and how will you contribute to our program and its growth. Compose a two-page essay that addresses the following questions: Why do you want to participate in the program? What makes you an ideal AMI Fellow? What distinctive experiences and skills will you bring to this learning community and how will you contribute to the 2017 AMI Fellowship team? What are your current views of our food system and what ideas do you have for strengthening it? How do you intend to apply your knowledge from the program to our communities, your professional career, and your future?

    All essays must be single-spaced, 12 point font with 1.5-inch margins. Please include in the footer your name (last, first), date of submission, and page number. Submit your statement of purpose as a PDF named LastNameFirstName_Statement (insert your name).


  • Please include a formal resume demonstrating your experience and skills in any of the following:

    · Education/Degree(s) and dates attended

    · Certification(s) or other formal training (ex: EMT, web/technology, yoga)

    · Growing food, farming and/or community gardening

    · Culinary experience

    · Teaching (children and/or adults)

    · Health, nutrition, science education

    · Managing volunteer groups

    · Construction and mechanical skills

    · Graphic design, web design, photography

    · Record keeping and data management

    · Community and team leadership experience

    · Organizational leadership and nonprofit experience

    · Other applicable, transferable skills
