  • Submission Categories:

    "MLK 17: Art for Social Change Competition" includes three distinct categories (listed below) for artists to explore. When submitting your creative piece, please note which category you are submitting to. Submissions from any medium will be accepted for consideration in the following areas:

    Remembering MLK and Revitalizing the Dream

    Submissions that commemorate the history of the Civil Rights Movement and the legacy of MLK, and those that relate to the MLK17 Program theme: Revitalizing the Dream.

    Social Justice In Action

    Submissions that address contemporary issues of inequality and injustice at the local and/or global level. 

    Community-Building at WSU

    Submissions that foster an inclusive community at WSU (must be specific to WSU)

  • Criteria for Submissions: 

    • Submissions may come from any WSU undergraduate or graduate student and can include students from all branch campuses including WSU Spokane, WSU Tri-Cities, WSU Vancouver, WSU Everett, and WSU Global Campus

    • All creative works must be submitted and received by 5:00pm on November 30, 2016.

    • Submissions must be the entrants’ original idea. Entrants should not knowingly copy another's idea, but entries will not be excluded merely because another entrant has a similar idea.

    • Must not contain material which is (or promotes activities which are) sexually explicit, obscene, pornographic, offensive, threatening, profane, harassing, or discriminatory (based on race, sex, religion, natural origin, disability, sexual orientation, gender, or age), and must not promote illegal activities.

    • Must not include mention or performance of any non-authorized copyrighted media production including but not limited to music, films, books, television programming, etc., or identifying descriptions of any media property.

    • Must not contain material that violates or infringes another's rights, including but not limited to material that violates privacy, publicity or intellectual property rights, or that constitutes copyright infringement. Without limiting the foregoing, submissions must not include third party trademarks, logos, insignia, location signage, photographs, artwork, music, or sculptures without permission.

    • If requested, we will return your artwork by June 2017.

    The MLK Program reserves the right to use and reproduce the artwork on MLK marketing materials and during Washington State University events.

    • Entrants are responsible for all shipping costs.

    • Washington State University is not responsible for lost, damaged, or stolen artwork. Washington State University will not indemnify or insure artwork for damages to the work itself or for any loss that may result from the displaying of the artwork.

    I hereby declare that this submission is my own original work and to the best of my knowledge it contains no materials previously published or written by another artists, person, published source or reference not attributable to the artist. 

    I hereby attest to my submission as in compliance with the submission criteria stated above.

    I hereby give WSU MLK Program permission and the right to reproduce and use my artwork in future MLK Program promotional material.
