  • The Bettye Coe Donahue Scholarship 

    The Shelby County (TN) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated promotes scholarship through the Bettye Coe Donahue (BCD) Scholarship Program. The scholarship is named in honor of Delta Bettye Coe Donahue, a Howard University graduate, lifelong educator and living legacy.  The BCD Scholarship Fund has allowed the chapter to grant scholarships in excess of $100,000.00 since 2011 and a minimum of $10,000.00 in scholarships is awarded each year.

  • About Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

    Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a private, nonprofit organization whose purpose is to provide services and programs to promote human welfare. The sorority was founded on January 13, 1913 at Howard University by twenty-two (22) undergraduate women and has a membership of over 200,000 predominantly African American, college-educated women. The sorority currently has over 1,000 chapters located in the United States, Japan, Germany, Bermuda, Haiti, Liberia, the Bahamas, the Republic of Korea and the Virgin Islands. The major programs of the sorority are based upon the organization’s Five-Point Programmatic Thrust:

    • Economic Development
    • Educational Development
    • Political Awareness and Involvement
    • Physical and Mental Health
    • International Awareness and Involvement

    The Shelby County (TN) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated was chartered on April 25, 2009. The current membership is over 370 dynamic women committed to scholarship, sisterhood, and service. Since its inception, the chapter has been recognized for its service to the community and the sisterhood including but not limited to :

    •      2019 Red Ribbon Chapter

    •      2019 Distinguished Violet Reclamation Award

    •      2018 Get Out the Vote Award

    •      2016 Technology Program of the Year

    •      2014 Innovative Chapter of the Year

    •      2011 and 2016 Tennessee Chapter of the Year

     

     

  • Scholarship Eligibility Requirements

  • All African-American high school seniors, attending a public high school in the Shelby County, (TN) Alumnae Chapter service area are eligible to apply. (See attached school listing)

    Application Requirements:

    • Completed and signed application 
    • An essay on one of the topics listed on the Essay Instructions.
    • One (1) letter of recommendation from one of the following: 
      • Core Academic Teacher
      • Community Service Leader on the organization's letterhead
    • A copy of an official high school transcript with grades and class rank throughDecember 2019(this must be mailed in an official sealed envelope- if not the application will be considered invalid).
    • A completed Counselor Verification Form  

    The completed application, essay, letter of recommendation, and counselor verification form must be uploaded by 11:59 PM CST on Monday, March 16, 2020.

    An official transcript must be mailed and RECEIVED (not post-marked) by Monday March 16, 2020.

    All completed applications will be reviewed and scored by the Scholarship Committee. The scholarship recipients will be notified by April 8, 2020.

    1. In music, media & popular culture, the use of drugs (pop a molly) is casually referenced. How do you feel about this? Do you feel that this promotes drug use among teens & young adults? 
    2. How can the African American community support students and schools in their efforts to close the achievement gap?
    3. What can you do as a responsible, concerned citizen of your community to help resolve the problem of cyber and other bullying?
    4. What are the characteristics of a good leader and how do these characteristics apply to you within your school and community?
    5. The United States of America elected Barack Obama, its first President of color in 2008. Who is the next person of color that could ascend to the presidency? Will it be easier or harder for them to make the political ascent? Why?
