Children Write: Children's Rights Writing Competition
The Canadian Coalition for the Rights of Children (CCRC) is a network of Canadian organizations and individuals who promote respect for the rights of children. Its purpose is to: exchange information; provide public education materials about the Convention on the Rights of the Child; monitor implementation of the Convention in Canada; and engage in dialogue with government officials on child rights issues. To help inform children about the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UN CRC), the CCRC will initiate its first annual creative writing competition for children to express their views and experiences with different aspects of children's rights. This contest is open to students in Canada from grades 4 through 12. We welcome submissions from all young writers in this general age range (approximately 9 - 18 years old) from traditional schools or homeschooling. The deadline is on Tuesday, June 1, 2021. E-mail:ccrc.rights.events@gmail.com if you have any questions!
Each student is eligible to submit one (1) creative piece.
This year, the focus will be on racism and discrimination. Participants will be asked to address one of the following questions: 1) How racism and discrimination have affected their lives? 2) What Article 2 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UN CRC) means to them? ( Article 2 can be found here: https://archive.crin.org/en/home/rights/convention/articles/article-2-non-discrimination.html) 3)What are the different ways of taking action against racism and discrimination? The competition accepts submissions of creative writing pieces (fiction or nonfiction) of no more than 1000 words from young writers all across Canada in either English or French. Three prizes will be awarded in three categories: Elementary (Grades 4 to 6) Junior (Grades 7 to 9) and Senior (Grades 10 to 12). First Place: $100; Second Place: $50; Third Place: $25. First prize winners in each category will be invited to read their work at the CCRC Annual General Meeting. Selected pieces will be published on the CCRC website.
Creative pieces may be submitted by the author, or by a teacher or parent.
