    This is an official contract that will be used by your RA and REHS to facilitate disputes and issues if they should arise throughout the year. Please take this document seriously as it will be sent back for resubmission if responses are inadequate.

  • Reflection

    Take time to reflect on your own history/background and share with each other about yourselves.
  • Some prompts to consider:

    • Do you have a preferred name or nickname?
    • Where do you come from?
    • What are your hobbies?
    • What are your three top values?
    • What type of music do you like?
    • What are your customs?
    • Favorite food?
    • What are your "pet peeves"?
    • How do you manage conflict?

  • Shared Space

    • Do you have expectations around sleeping?
      • When do you go to bed?
      • When do you get up?
      • When do you take naps?
    • Do you have expectations around studying?
    • Where can you place your belongings?
    • What expectations do you have around noise level?
      • What music can be played without headphones?
      • When can you watch TV or listen to music?
        • While roommate is napping, sleeping, or studying?
  • Guests and Visitors

    • What type of guest can you have over?
      • Friend, partner/significant other, family, opposite sex?
    • When can guests enter the space?
      • What if you're sleeping, studying, not home, etc?
    • When are guests not allowed to enter the space?
    • If permitted, what expectations are there for overnight guests?
      • Note: Specific guests policies can be found in the On-Campus Housing Handbook
    • How will you communicate about visits from guests?
    • How will you communicate if you feel uncomfortable?
      • Note: 8.1. "No person shall permit a non-resident visitor to remain in room for more than three continuous days during any given week."
  • Shared Belongings

    • What items can you use of each other's?
      • Electronics, printers, paper, computers, bathroom/hygiene products, furniture, food, clothes, etc.?
    • If certain items are not to be shared (i.e. food, products, etc.), how will you let your Roommate know?
    • What are the expectations around using each other's items?
      • When can you use the items?
      • What if the other person is not present?
      • How do you ask permission?
    • What are the expectations around guests using your belongings?
    • If something is broken or damaged, how will it be handled?
    • Are there specific items you will each be responsible to provide for the room (i.e. hand soap, cleaning supplies, etc.)?
  • Cleaning

  • • What does a clean space look like to you?
    • How often should the space be cleaned?
    • How often will the trash and recyclables be taken out? By whom?
    • Who is responsible for providing cleaning supplies?
    • Who will be responsible for cleaning?

  • Conflict

    • How do you prefer to deal with conflict?
    • Will you have regularly planned Roommate meetings to discuss issues? If so, when?
    • How will you inform your Roommate if you have a concern/conflict?
    • If you feel that the conflict is not resolved, what will you do? At what point do you involve the RA?
    • Consider some of the following common conflicts and talk about how you plan to navigate them:
      • Hygiene Concerns
      • Cleanliness
      • Noise Level (i.e. music, TV, phone calls)
      • Unwelcomed Guests
    • At what point will you involve the RA?
