    Healthy Bodies Healthy Minds Institute
  • The Pottstown Area Health & Wellness Foundation formally announces a call for speaker proposals for the 2019 Healthy Bodies Healthy Minds Institute on Wednesday, August 14th at The Sunnybrook in Pottstown, PA. 

    An outline that includes a section-by-section description of this form, details about the conference learning objectives, and additional speaker guidelines can be found by clicking here.

    The deadline to submit a proposal is April 18, 2019.  Proposal selections and declinations will be communicated on or before April 30, 2019.

    Healthy Bodies Healthy Minds Institute

  • Active Learning - The unique and creative heart of this event. These sessions include examples of programs, classroom management techniques, lesson plan development, active learning with special or targeted populations (such as students with IEPs or student-athletes), use of kinesthetic classroom equipment, and cross curricular instruction.

    Social and Emotional Learning - School or building wide approaches to support healthy eating and nutrition education of students and faculty. Sessions will include academic food systems, cooking classes for students or faculty, school garden programs and more.

    Mental Health - Topics for this section include Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) and training teachers to recognize the effects of trauma in students--helping teachers and other adults develop relationships that can overcome the effects of trauma in students.  Additionally, topics such as suicide prevention, drop-out prevention, drug and alcohol prevention programs, and positive behavioral intervention system (PBIS) and more.

    Healthy Eating / Nutrition Education -  School or building wide approaches to support healthy eating and nutrition education of students and faculty.  Sessions will include academic food systems, cooking classes for students or faculty, school garden programs and more.

    Capacity Building for Wellness Teams and Champions - Topics for these sessions include advocating and empowering wellness teams to tackle issues, changing policies, leading building wellness teams, parent advocates, and student-centered change.

  • Mind Active - These sessions are primarily delivered with little to no physical activity. The sessions could include some movement but are delivered with attendees largely being sedentary or standing in place.

    Mind and Body Active - These presentations are delivered with minimal physical activity but less sedentary and could include movements that cause for an increased heart rate. The presentation could involve brain breaks and team building activities that involve more movement. Still, the session would not require work out gear.

    Body Intensive - These sessions require higher levels of physical activity as part of the instruction. They could include classroom activities such as Hopscotch Math & Spelling or group exercise such as dynamic stretching. These sessions could be better served if attendees have workout gear.

      Healthy Bodies Healthy Minds Institute (HBHM or 'The Institute') is an annual conference designed to nurture interdisciplinary roles of educators, administrators, and researchers in fostering school environments that promote wellness as a core component of student achievement.

      WHAT ARE THE GOALS OF HBHM?

      • To review current research in the conference focus areas.
      • To infuse wellness into the classroom culture.
      • To provide educators with the skills and knowledge to implement brain-based learning with their students.
      • To develop a multidisciplinary school-based team that will implement exercise and learning initiatives in their schools.
      • To provide a forum for discussion and collaboration among like-minded educators.
      • To assist in the development of action plans for health and wellness programming at the school building level.

       

      WHAT ARE THE LEARNING OBJECTIVES?

      CAN ATTENDEES EARN ACT 48 CREDITS?

      Yes. Any PA Registered teacher that needs continuing education credit can receive Act 48 credit through our partner, Fizika Group, LLC.

       

      WHAT SPEAKER SESSIONS ARE TYPICALLY OFFERED AT HBHM?

      Historically, sessions have been offered by leading educators, neuro-scientists, psychologists, and others that specialize in the professional development of teachers and school administrators.  Sessions that address specific physical activity components, techniques for integrating movement into the classroom, social and emotional learning, mindfulness, nutrition topics, community partnerships for schools, staff wellness, and best practice models from around the nation are desired.  

      HBHM continues to implement new and innovative ideas to the content offerings, so please feel free to be creative with unique concepts that are being proven to infuse wellness into school culture. 

        

      WHAT ARE THE SPEAKER SESSION FOCUS AREAS FOR HBHMI 2018?

      Active Learning - The unique and creative heart of this event. These sessions include examples of programs, classroom management techniques, lesson plan development, active learning with special or targeted populations (such as students with IEPs or student-athletes), use of kinesthetic classroom equipment, and cross curricular instruction.

      Social and Emotional Learning - Topics for these sessions include resilience, mindfulness, yoga and breathing, trauma-informed classrooms, and is open to other successful classroom management topics that promote learning readiness from an emotional wellness perspective.

      Mental Health - Topics for this section include Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) and training teachers to recognize the effects of trauma in students--helping teachers and other adults develop relationships that can overcome the effects of trauma in students. Additionally, topics such as suicide prevention, drop-out prevention, drug and alcohol prevention programs, and positive behavioral intervention system (PBIS) and more.

      SPEAKER PROPOSAL DEADLINES

      All proposals being submitted are requesting to present on one or more of the days of the Institute.  Should your session be selected, please pay close attention to the conference day to which you are requested to present. The deadlines to submit proposals and date that HBHM team will communicate sessions acceptance are on the first page of this form.  

        

      SPEAKER PROPOSAL INSTRUCTIONS

      All Presenter Details including Instructions for submitting a winning proposal and additional speaker guidelines to help you prepare your proposal can be found on the link on the first page of this form. Sessions will be considered on the basis of alignment with HBHMI goals, merit and field expertise. 

       

      WHAT SHOULD ATTENDEES EXPECT?
      You can expect two days of collaboration with your peers working on a common goal. Teams and colleagues should come ready to listen to other’s experiences, and ready to share their own experiences and ideas. Please dress in comfortable attire suited for physical activity and summer weather.

       

      WHO SHOULD ATTEND HBHM?

      Interdisciplinary school teams and individuals interested in transforming their school into a movement-centered building should attend the Institute. Attendees may include classroom teachers, nurses, health and physical education teachers, administrators, school counselors and any other motivated individual regardless of their official role.

       

      WHO SPONSORS HBHM?

      HBHMI is sponsored by the Pottstown Area Health & Wellness Foundation ('The Foundation').  The Foundation is a community nonprofit organization whose mission is to enhance the health and wellness of area residents by providing education, funding and programs that motivate people to adopt healthy lifestyles.

      The Foundation awards grants to area nonprofit organizations which use their resources and services to develop and enhance programs that support our purpose of promoting health and wellness. Grant awards are based on four key priority areas which include improvement in healthy behaviors through schools.

      Since 2004, more than $8 million has been awarded to the public and private schools within the Foundation’s service area. In short, the Foundation’s role is to help area residents improve their health and well-being every day. By doing so, we are creating a more dynamic and more vibrant community in which to live now… and into the future.
