• VHS 7/8 Enrichment

    Course Registration 2018-2019

  • Once again,  we are pleased to offer students in Grade 7 & 8 courses to complement their regular academic studies.  With many enrichment opportunities available, students are encouraged to take a variety of courses in order to broaden their perspectives.  Outcomes for these courses will fulfill curriculum for Fine Arts, Practical and Applied Arts, and Core Courses such as Health, Guidance, Language Arts, Math, and Physical Education.

    Please read the following course descriptions carefully. 

  •  

    Term 1- Block A & B 

    ALL YEAR Grade 7 & 8 Band ($185 yearly fee)

     o   Continue your adventure learning to listen to, read, and play a variety of music in an ensemble

     Beginners are still welcome, talk to Miss Robertson if you have not already signed up.  Band Fees apply.
       
    Drawing 

    Explore different drawing media such as pencil, charcoal, ink Learn about value, shading, contrast, perspective

    Draw accurate still life, landscapes, and portraits
     
    Web Design

    Students will explore the facets of good web design before using an assortment of tools to create an interesting website. This will involve some app smashing as we construct the content for the sites. Participants will develop a variety of skills including communication, problem solving and flexible thinking. Popular free web editors include Wix, Weebly and Google Sites.  
     

    The Real Game 

    What are you going to be when you grow up? 
    Students discover the importance of education and lifelong learning. The program incorporates diverse subject and skill areas such as, decision making, communication, teamwork, analysis, self-awareness, time and priority management, budgeting, financial planning, and critical thinking. It also teaches career exploration, planning and management skills.   

    Digital Photography and Art (Block B)

    Explore photography composition, creativity, technical components and editing/creating art using Adobe Photoshop.

    * If you took photography last year, please register in Term 3


    Wood Turning and Burning  (Block A)
    (Limit 12) 
    Students will further develop wood turning and pyrography techniques introduced in grade 7/8 IA. 


    Cajon Build and Play  (Block B) 
    (limit 12)  
    Students will build and learn to play a cajon  
    ($20 fee - a cajon is a box drum) 
     

    Nutrition/Cooking
    Discover the Canadian Food Guide and evaluate your eating habits. LearnTips and Tricks in cooking to improve nutritional content . - reading recipes, adapting recipes, cooking, tasting, creating

    Drama (Block A)
    Have you got a flair for the dramatic?

    Engage in drama activities like mime, improv, and acting from a script, write and perform short dramas, and take part in a readers' theatre performance of a longer play.

    Writing a Fantasy Story (Block B)
    -create a map of your own fantastic world to guide your story 
    -develop a group of characters to go on a quest 
    -learn how to describe your setting, and how to design a plot that carries your characters to victory over the evil that stands in their way! 

  • Term 2 Block A & B

    Painting 
    Explore different colour media like watercolour, pastel, and acrylic.  Learn about colour theory, contrast 
    Paint still life, abstracts, landscapes 

    Digital Media Production 

    The main focus of this class will be to investigate the process of stop motion. Using mobile devices and apps like Stop Motion Studio Pro, students will be challenged to create a stop motion project using a variety of media.

    Wood Turning and Burning  (Block A)
    (Limit 12)
    Students will further develop wood turning and pyrography techniques introduced in grade 7/8 IA.

    Cajon Building and Playing  (Block B)

    (limit 12)
    Students will build and learn to play a cajon.

    Fabric Art  
    Handmade Creations: artful/useful products made from fabric, yarn or other textile materials. 
    Projects may include: Loom knitting; knitting; knotted blankets; crocheting; felting 

    Winter, Snow and the Great Outdoors (Block A)
    This is your opportunity to get cozy with winter! We will engage in some indoor, but mostly outdoor, activities like examining snow crystals, making quinzhees, doing research on winter themes, and snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.

    **STUDENTS MUST HAVE WARM WINTER BOOTS, A PARKA OR SKI JACKET, AND GOOD QUALITY MITTS AND GLOVES IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE.

    The Debaters (Block B)
    -argue on both sides of big issues like: Which is better, Snickers or Kit Kats? Should students wear school uniforms?  
    -engage in a clash of ideas with your fellow debaters 
    -learn how to research and argue for your ideas effectively 

    Graphic Design (Block B)

    Learn to design and publish engaging visuals for magazines, photography, advertising, and promotion.  Develop skills in typography, visual arts, and page layout.

    Money Matters

    Manage your money! Financial Literacy for life introducing budgeting, income, investment, and credit.

     Nutrition/Cooking

    Tips and Tricks in cooking to improve nutritional content without affecting taste. - reading recipes, adapting recipes, cooking, tasting, creating

     

    Design and Build a Block Car (limit 15)

    Students will learn drafting techniques then use these techniques to design and build block car.


    Introduction to Coding
    Scratch is a free online tool that enables students of all ages to create games, animations and stories. In this introduction to coding class, students will use Scratch to design a video game in a collaborative environment.

    Writing a Fantasy Story (Block A)
    -create a map of your own fantastic world to guide your story 
    -develop a group of characters to go on a quest 
    -learn how to describe your setting, and how to design a plot that carries your characters to victory over the evil that stands in their way! 

    Drama (Block B)
    Have you got a flair for the dramatic?

    Ceramics/Sculpture 
    Learn properties of clay through creation of useful and decorative pieces 
    Experiment with 3D sculpture using found materials like tape, wire, wood, metal, Styrofoam 

    Digital Photography II (Block B)
    Extend your understanding of photography composition, creativity. Intended for students who have already taken digital photography last year or first term.  

    Fitness for Life 
    Get fit and have fun! Try different types of fitness activities and games to help you stay physically active for life.
