Navigation Equipment
Remarks:
NOTE: There have been too many problems with the training and familiarisation of ECDIS with duty officers. It is extremely important for the bridge team to know the system in details and questions can be very detailed during an inspection. Training and knowledge must be from the company familiarisation checklist, and the following list is not comprehensive. These, however, cover most of the questions which any inspector can ask the duty officers. For those few vessels with paper charts as the primary means of navigation, most of the following are applicable, for the rest just click NA.
Navigational Policies and Procedures
NOTE: In case the inspection is not live, there must be proper record keeping to reconstruct the procedures below.
NOTE: Guidelines to fill the Deck Log and Movement books are given in a separate section, arranged in a way that the officers will not miss out anything in real time.
NOTE: ECDIS ships can have a back up system of Paper charts. Or they may carry a few Take me home folios which are paper charts. These few charts must be fully corrected and normal procedure for any paper chart to be followed. Also, Following will be paper charts carried on board - Routing charts; Magnetic Variation Charts; Route planning charts (English Channel, Singapore straits etc) Anti-piracy planning chart (as applicable).
