Mindful Emotion Coachingis about building emotional resilience and mental wellbeing by enabling conversations about emotions behind behaviours and building understanding of the neuroscience of brain development, human interactions and mindful awareness. Some people would say we are working with the neurobiological, emotional and social aspects of human interactions, others might use the term interpersonal neurobiology.
Core Resources : www.emotioncoaching.co.uk and www.mindfulemotioncoaching.co.uk . By asking everyone to refer to the same source of core information we can keep a common language across services as well as with parents and young people.
All training sessions aim to enable learners to feel in control, involved and interested with clear learning goals (Hand Model , 5 Steps) , Immediate Feedback (have a go , share in pairs, role play) and sensitive , flexible balance of demands to tasks. Choice is an important part of learning and learners need to feel able to choose how they cascade and how their ability to cascade is assessed - some will write a report, some make a presentation, some bring feedback from young people or parents.
Safeguarding is the golden thread through our training and Group Rules regarding confidentiality, respect and so on are fundamental. So is acknowledgement that we all come to this with our own Family of Origin Experience which means that learners will sometimes find some exercises emotionally challenging. It is important that there are always two facilitators and that the option for being an observer is always given. Other than initial (short) introductions I would strongly advise against doing any exercises that involve going round the group one by one as this may mean a learner who needs to observe at that moment is made to feel uncomfortable.
Priority mapping – Dan Siegel, Hand Model and John Gottman 5 steps of Emotion Coaching – keep bringing attention back to these core learning priorities with an expectation that everyone will demonstrate learning at some point (Choice)
The outcome we are working to is that you feel competent to train and support Emotion Coaching Cascaders by the end of 2017.
