What is Bridge Tutoring?
The Bridge Tutoring Program is a free, city-wide, student-led initiative designed to match under-resourced elementary students with high achieving high school-aged tutors within the same communities. The program was founded in 2016, and has expanded to four southside neighborhoods with over 400 students and tutors who are currently involved with the organization. As an organization, we take pride in being 100% student-operated and would like to continue this tradition for the years to come. The current Board of Directors is looking for academically high-performing, low-income high school students to take charge of this city-wide organization next year. These students should not only be committed to the program, they should also be eager to contribute to their communities. Personal traits like leadership abilities, forward-thinking, exceptional interpersonal skills, compassion, and commitment are by far the most important attributes we take into consideration when selecting next year’s board.
Benefits:
This leadership position is unlike many others since it shows independence, community service, as well an intellectual spark unique to teenage entrepreneurs managing nonprofits. Our mission inclines us to recruit a team that is efficient, communicative, self-directed, and community-oriented. Given this, the program is also dramatically rewarding in the college application process with the current board and branch leaders accepted to highly-selective universities like Brown University, Columbia University, Dartmouth College, Harvard College, Northwestern University, Pomona College, the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Chicago.
Aside from offering an edge in the college application process, Bridge Tutoring Leaders have also been recognized by various media sources including Telemundo, NBC, Univision, WGN, ABC 7 Windy City Live, The GATE Newspaper, and ON THE MONEY TEEN MAGAZINE. They have also received national awards such as the Hispanic Heritage Award- 1st Place for Entrepreneurship and Business, grants with a combined value of over $12,500, the Gloria Barron prize, as well as offered a position to present a TEDx Talk.
Application Process:
The application process is rather simple and strongly oriented around a 60-90 minute interview. After examining the title, role, and qualifications for the open Bridge position, please respond to the questions on this form as completely and honestly as possible. We will prioritize those who apply the earliest, so it is in our applicants' best interest to submit this form as soon as possible.
The tentative deadline to apply is June 1st, 2020 at 11:59 PM. Please reach out to us at bridgetutoringprogram@gmail.com if the current pandemic has affected you or your ability to submit this application on time.
