For engagement ring stones, we normally recommend sapphire due to its hardness and durability. However, with proper care, other gems are perfectly acceptable as well. Please select from one of the following options:

Excellent choice! Sapphire is the hardest and most durable colored gem overall, and it is hard to think of a better choice for an engagement ring.  Click the "next" arrow to continue telling us about your preferences.
    Press
    Enter
  • 3
What general color family or families appeal to you? Sapphires come in just about every color of the rainbow, so you have a ton of options to choose from! You can select more than one, if you're undecided. Just focus on the basic color for now. We'll discuss how light/dark you want in a moment. (for example, if you are ultimately looking for a lavender sapphire, choose purple below as the basic color family)
    Press

While not quite as hard as a sapphire, spinel is still considered quite durable among colored gems and with proper care makes an excellent engagement ring stone. Click the "next" arrow to continue telling us about your preferences.

Spinels primarily come in shades of pink, red, blue, and lavender. You can select more than one, if you're undecided. Just focus on the basic color for now. We'll discuss how light/dark you want in a moment. (for example, if you are ultimately looking for a lavender spinel, choose purple below as the basic color family)

While not quite as hard as a sapphire, chrysoberyl is still considered quite durable among colored gems and with proper care makes an excellent engagement ring stone. As you may know, color-change chrysoberyl is given the special name "Alexandrite." Click the "next" arrow to continue telling us about your preferences.
    Press
    Enter
  • 7
What general color family or families appeal to you? Regular chrysoberyl is typically yellow, chartreuse, or golden. Alexandrite displays a color-change, with the very best changing from a purplish-pink to bluegreen depending on the light source. You can select more than one color, if you're undecided.
    Press

Do you have something else in mind other than sapphire, spinel, or chrysoberyl? No problem whatsoever! As mentioned at the start, other gems may be lower on the durability scale, but they can make wonderful engagement ring stones too, as long as the appropriate precautions are taken.  Click the "next" arrow to tell us more.

OK, so this can be a complicated and confusing topic! There are two somewhat related properties that combine to define what most people think of how "rich," "saturated," or "dark" a gem is. Those properties are called "tone" and "saturation." Rather than getting into the details of what those terms mean, let's just talk about a rough categorization based on the 4 selections below. Blue sapphire is used here for simplicity. If you chose something other than a blue sapphire above, the "hue" (or color) will be different, but the basic concept will be the same. Please choose your ideal darkness/saturation, or choose two to illustrate the lightest and darkest that you would find acceptable. Please note that some gem types do not span this entire spectrum of tone/saturation, but that is a detail that we can discuss in our follow-up conversation.

Check all that apply. Please note that these are VERY general representations of the more frequently requested cuts, with JL White Fine Gemstones having literally dozens of specific designs of each type, as well as many shapes not even represented here. Once we get the basics out of the way, Jeff can work with you to determine the exact cut that best meets your needs. If nothing below looks like what you're after, just select "other," and you'll have the opportunity to describe what you have in mind.

Carat weight and face-up size (length and width) depend on one another, so it isn't a good idea to try to target something specific for both of them. Most customers either want to target a specific weight range or a specific face-up size. Please indicate which is most important to you:
