*All percussion students are expected to learn to play all percussion instruments. These videos are split into two parts because of the different nature of the instruments, not because you play either/or!

We are very excited that your child has selected BAND as their 6th grade related arts choice! We believe that band helps to create some of the best kids that come through Springfield Middle School. Below are a few items we want to make sure everyone understands about our band program. While we do have ALL the fun and students love being a part of our program, we do expect a lot from our students and want to ensure everyone is aware of the following:

1) Band takes hard work and practice. We are teaching and developing a skill that requires muscle memory. Therefore, it must be practiced on a daily basis for a student to truly be successful. (15-20 minutes, 6 days per week)

2) Band requires that every student practice their instrument at home. (There MAY be an option for larger instruments to have 2 instruments: one at home and one at school.)

3) Band teaches students about responsibility, preparedness, team work, and self reflection. Sometimes failure in a safe environment is the BEST way to learn.

4) Individual private lessons will be strongly encouraged for every student in our program.

5) Band does have some financial investment in your child's future. However, the benefits of this investment are tenfold! Scholarships are available, if needed.

6) Band is a family and we all work together. We know we can teach each student best when we are all on the same page and working towards the same goals.

7) We hold our band students to very high behavior expecations both in our classroom and in their other classes. Band kids are the BEST kids everywhere!

8) Band is life-changing! Students who enter our band program come out better people and musicians.

While most of this seems obvious, we wanted to make sure you understand that band is a special place at Springfield Middle School and we take pride in our students being awesome. Welcome to the awesomeness and.... The SPRINGFIELD BAND!!

INSTRUMENT FITTINGS

ALL 6th Grade band students are REQUIRED to attend the instrument fitting session WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 10th from 10am until 4pm at Nation Ford High School.

TESTING APPOINTMENT INFORAMTION VIA SIGNUP GENIUS WILL BE EMAILED TO FAMILIES PRIOR TO THE CONCLUSION OF THE PRESENT SCHOOL YEAR.

In order to have the best change for your students first instrument placement choice, please plan on attending so your musician can be properly fitted.

BAND OPEN HOUSE

*REQUIRED*
Once your student has been properly tested and fitted on their instrument, the next step is to get an instrument in their hands. Students will receive their instrument assignments on the second day of school.

Please mark your calendars - ALL 6th Grade band families are REQUIRED to attend the BAND OPEN HOUSE session THURSDAY, AUGUST 23rd from 3:45pm until 7:30pm in the Springfield Middle School Band Room.

Music Roper, our preferred instrument dealer, is offering a great deal on instrument rental for the coming school year and will be the host for our Band Open House! Roper Music offers incredibly flexible rental plans and fair instrument prices. Any instrument that is purchased or rented through Roper Music will be in high quality and good working condition for your child to have a successful experience in band.

The Springfield Middle School Band Program does have REQUIRED brands for all instruments in the program. Our required brands represent high-quality materials and workmanship. It is important that our families acquire a well-made instrument in good working condition in order for your child to enjoy a successful experience in our program.

***Colored instruments (i.e. purple, pink, green, blue, etc.) or any instument from Amazon are NOT permitted in the Springfield Band Program. Avoid purchasing instruments online as many of them are not from reparable vendors and/or companies which will not guarantee their products.
