Digital Stage launched in 2024, supported by funding from the Canada Council for the Arts Strategic Innovation Fund, and in partnerships with Eastern Front Theatre, Urban Ink, Prairie Theatre Exchange, Neworld Theatre, and Theatre Passe Muraille.
Digital theatre is a new artform and therefore needs new business models. Bringing together those creating and producing online performances, we aim to expand the digital reach of presenters and producers (and thus Canadian artists) connecting them to audiences beyond their current regional markets. We want to simplify, restructure, and improve business practices in the digital performance sector to have a lasting impact, including:
- addressing barriers in contract models for digital theatre productions,
- creating shared marketing and distribution opportunities,
- improving ticketing system interconnectivity,
- piloting new ways of working sustainably with the national performing arts community.
The Cultch and our partners want to learn who is producing, presenting, and bringing online performances to their audiences today. You can help by responding to this short (5-10 min) survey about your current work and thoughts about online performance.
All perspectives are welcome, and you are welcome to answer any questions that are relevant to you. Survey responses will be managed by The Cultch’s digital team, and shared with our partners.
Digital performances can include a wide variety of disciplines across the performing arts (i.e. theatre, dance, circus), and may be delivered to audiences in many different formats (i.e. livestream, feature-length film, podcast, hybrid presentations). We want to identify potential partners who share our enthusiasm and we're interested to hear about your experiences; your challenges, learnings, and celebrations.
