Living Room Reset with Kirk Cameron-Live in Person 11-03-201811-03-2018 - - - Central Baptist Church-101 W Lexington Ave, Winchester, KY7:00 PM10:00 PMKirk Cameron will be bringing the Cameron living room to churches across the country, and want you to join him for a heartfelt conversation about what matters most to us as husbands, wives and parents. Think of it as a “home-run date night” with Kirk and his wife, Chelsea and also our special music guest, Matt Hammitt. A time to get away with your spouse for 3 hours with them to laugh together, pray together, learn together, and worship together, as everyone dives deep into the subjects that matter most to you and Kirk. And best of all, you’ll learn how to see your family with new eyes, and be inspired about giving your family a “Living Room Reset”.

Mary Todd: A New American Musical10-24-2018 - - - - Clark County Public Library 370 S. Burns Ave. Winchester, KY 403916:30 PM8:00 PMAbout the play: Bluegrass Opera is presenting this world premiere musical in honor of Mary Todd Lincoln’s 200th birthday (which is later this year), and we just received a grant to help us take it on the road to schools, libraries, museums, and other community groups around the state. The story follows the future First Lady as she struggles to navigate the world of the American South as a teenager during the 1830s. From a complicated relationship with her cold stepmother and well-meaning father to her warm and adventurous relationship with central Kentucky's African American community, and from bright dances at her finishing school to odd apothecary shops, Mary is never a traditional "young lady," but she does discover the varied colors and tones of adulthood. Developed in consultation with historians and experts, and supported by grants from the HSG Foundation and LexArts, Mary Todd is not just about one woman; it's about the coming-of-age of Kentucky – just as Mary is faced with deciding what sort of person she will be, our Commonwealth and our country are at a similar crossroads. The work prominently highlights the issue of women’s rights, and also features strong women of color, including a slave in the Todd household (Sally) and a freed black woman (Catherine L’Espoire) seeking to secure her husband’s freedom.

Audience Appropriateness: Grades 4 through adult (study guides available for teachers of grades 4, 5, and 8 who wish to bring classes)

Closing Reception for Holly VanMeter's A Bit of Whimsy Art Show08-23-2018 - - - - Leeds Center for the Arts 6:00 PM8:00 PMHolly VanMeter’s artwork plays with perspective and realism in a way that requires a double take. Beautifully rendered flowers sit on a flat background to make a dress. Intricate wallpaper turns out to be collaged fabric. Rose beads blend perfectly with painted ones. Much like Mary Poppins, the fanciful artwork encourages us to see beyond our expectation and notice the magic in front of our eyes.

Join us at Leeds Center for the Arts as we thank Holly VanMeter for sharing her artwork with our community.

Outside our Doors06-10-2018 - - - - Leeds Center for the Arts2:00 PM - From heart breaking to hopeful, this original play titled Outside Our Doors highlights the stories of the people of Winchester. Characters both marginalized and revered, emerge in this narrative about the realities and hardships of life.

Members of Leeds Center for the Art’s Youth Board have spent months interviewing members of the community, hoping to capture voices and perspectives that are frequently silent. Topics such as race relations, homelessness, addiction, sexual assault, domestic violence, and LGTBQ rights are addressed throughout the play.

Along with special guest musician, Ben Sollee, the Youth Board invites the audience to consider how the people and events of a small town shape the fabric of a community.

Written and Directed by Margo Buchanan and the Leeds Youth Advisory Board.

We encourage participants to don their favorite holiday sweater, Santa suit, or “holiday festive” attire and embrace the spirit of the holiday.

Prizes awarded for best costume.

You may register as an individual runner/walker or with a group as a Santapede team. Teams (only offered in the 5K) consist of three to 10 people (adults and children may be combined in one group). There’s one hitch - you have to be linked together with a garland or ribbon throughout the entire race. We will recognize the top finishers in each category, as well as those Santapede teams that celebrate the holiday spirit most brightly.

The Lexington Survivors of Suicide Loss Support Group and the brothers of Phi Gamma Delta at the University of Kentucky are hosting The Walk for HOPE on Saturday, September 30th.

Local History Week: George Rogers Clark, Revolutionary War Hero08-30-2017 - - - - Clark County Public Library, 370 South Burns Ave.6:30 PM8:00 PMGeorge Rogers Clark came to Kentucky as a surveyor, but it was as a military leader during the Revolutionary War that he made his mark. In 1777, Clark won approval from Virginia governor Patrick Henry for a secret mission to attack British posts north of the Ohio River. Clark's party set up camp on Corn Island near the falls of the Ohio River in May, 1778. The next month Clark launched a campaign into present-day Illinois and Indiana, defeating the British and their Indian allies and securing the Northwest Territory for the United States.

Meanwhile, the settlers Clark had brought along moved from Corn Island to the Kentucky shore, founding the city of Louisville in late 1778. His war exploits marked the peak of Clark's career. Plagued by debts, drinking and poor health, he spent his later years living in Louisville. Overshadowed by his brother William, of Lewis and Clark fame, he never got the credit he thought he had earned.

Local History Week: Wild Wolf, The Great Civil War Rivalry08-29-2017 - - - - Clark County Public Library, 370 South Burns Ave.6:30 PM8:00 PMToday, only a few scholars are familiar with the name Col. Frank Lane Wolford. However, 150 years ago this man was nationally known and in powerful oration, perhaps unwittingly, nearly changed the face of this country.

He had high cheekbones, an eagle like beak of a nose, his hair was black as coal, and he had piercing gray eyes. He had the stature and the resemblance of a wise Cherokee Chief. He was five feet eleven inches tall and 180 pounds and at the age of 47 he had a powerful build. Wounded seven times he fought in over 300 battles and skirmishes. He was deeply loved and respected by his men and was known for his generosity.

Some “red tape” Union military leaders considered his style too independent and irregular. The Wild Riders, many of them wild mountain men themselves, understood his homespun commands and obeyed him. His antithesis, the aristocratic rebel raider, John Hunt Morgan considered “Wild Wolf” the most feared and most dreaded Union Cavalry Commander to meet on the field of battle. Strangely, they had a deep respect for each other. Both Cavalry Commanders were proud of their fine spirited Kentucky steeds. Both Kentucky regiments were known for being hard riding and daring Cavaliers. Wolford’s Cavalry was famously known for riding the finest thoroughbred mounts in the Bluegrass.

During the “Lebanon Races” and “The Great Chase” both man and beast were challenged for stamina and endurance. This is a story about Wolford’s military and political rivalry during the war and his political rivalry that continued post-war. The First Kentucky Cavalry was the oldest Union Kentucky Cavalry in the war. Please register to attend.

Local History Week: The African-American Travel Experience in Jim Crow Kentucky08-28-2017 - - - - Clark County Public Library, 370 South Burns Ave.6:30 PM8:00 PMIn twentieth-century Jim Crow Kentucky, African Americans had all the concerns of travel that anyone would have, plus a number more. Instead of calculating the distance to the nearest rest stop or filling station, they had to know whether or not those proprietors would refuse them service or be outright hostile. Using the Green Book Travel Guide as a jumping off point, Higgins will discuss the ways that African Americans’ traveled through the state. She’ll discuss how neighbors and neighborhoods throughout the state created opportunities for African Americans to vacation and safely travel during segregation, and how travel and traveling influenced the Civil Rights movement.http://clarkbooks.evanced.info/admin/signup/EventDetails?EventId=4912&backTo=Calendar&startDate=2017/08/07Education
