AUDITIONS

August 7 3:00-8:00pm  Finding Nemo and Diary of A Wimpy Kid. You will select a 10 minute time frame. Only choose ONE time slot even if you are auditioning for BOTH shows. 

 

August 8 1:00-5:00pm  Elf Jr. will have its own SEPARATE sign up. Please choose a five minute time slot. siblings cannot share these and each need their own. 

 

 To help Auditions run smoothly and give casting directors time to cast all three shows. We will have auditions on TWO dates. Students will sign up for one 5 or 10 minute time slot to audition. Nemo/Wimpy will audition for both shows in the same time slot.  Elf will sign up for a 5 minute time slot.  they are interested in. This will enable students to not need multiple audition time slots. If a student is auditioning for Nemo but not Diary then they will only audition for the show they are interested in but still sign up for the 10 minute time slot. 

Siblings are welcome to share a time slot but only two per time slot and we will see them individually. 

Audition days are long and patience is needed. Your time slot lets us know you are coming but you may need to wait. 

Dance calls will be needed for Elf jr. Every 30 minutes of auditions a group will go to the large studio room. They will learn a combo and then that will help us see what level dancer you are. We welcome all levels and you will be cast no matter what. 

Video auditions are also welcome but should only be submitted if an audition in person is not possible.

CONFLICTS

Please help the casting team and directors out by bringing any conflicts to auditions. This will enable us to make a rehearsal plan and to see who has the time to commit to the lead roles.  This INCLUDES adding in what additional shows you are involved in that may take your time and attention away from Discovery. 

COMMITMENT

Please do not over commit yourselves. If you are able to balance multiple shows, that is great. However if there is significant overlap in rehearsals with other shows, you need to leave early the weeks leading up to our show or miss for other shows. It will be hard for the casting team to entrust a lead role to you and is not fair to the cast for either show. Balance means making tough decisions sometimes. 

REGISTRATION 

Registration is required to participate and tuition fees are due by August 5th. 

ENTITLEMENT

 No one is entitled to a lead role. Wether you have been with us from the beginning or are new this semester, everyone is on equal ground. However, the casting team does take in consideration past behavior and work ethic. For example, if you had a bad attitude with the role you were cast in last season, complained excessively or did not committ to the role you were given, we will take that in consideration when casting. This also goes for work ethic. If you did not put in the effort to memorize lines by off book date, learn choroe etc. again, that causes the casting team a little trouble. All that to say, come in to auditions prepared but also humble.

Show and Character Descriptions

Summary
Middle school, ugh. It’s the worst. But Greg Heffley is determined not to be at the bottom of the popularity chart. He’ll leave that to his weird neighbor, Fregley. Or maybe his best friend, Rowley Jefferson. But it’s not going to be Greg... no way.

Jeff Kinney’s popular character takes center stage as Greg’s cartoon diary becomes a hilarious and heartfelt musical. Will Greg’s plans to become popular lead him to sacrifice his one true friend? GREG HEFLEY Male - 11
11 year-old, first year middle-schooler, driven with a burning desire to achieve popularity and acclaim at any and all costs. Equal parts cocky and insecure, Greg’s single-focus on popularity often makes him short-sighted and immature, almost costing him his closest friendship. Strong, comedic young performer with a powerful, unchanged singing voice.

ROWLEY JEFFERSON Male - 11 (will consider a female bestie as well)
11 year-old, first year middle-schooler, with a determinedly sunny disposition and über positive outlook on life. Almost blindly devoted to Greg, but ultimately capable of standing up for himself. Strong, comedic young performer with a powerful, unchanged singing voice. 

RODRICK HEFLEY Male - 16 (will consider female if needed)
Sullen, sarcastic 16 year-old, older brother of Greg, and his main tormentor. Brash and obnoxious, Rodrick is the front-man of the heavy-metal, garage band; Löded Diper and delights in torturing Greg and taxing their parents goodwill. Strong, comedic young performer with a powerful, singing voice.

MANNY HEFFLEY Male or Female
Impossibly adorable and spoiled baby brother of Greg and Rodrick. Manny enjoys exalted status as his parents dote on him and make constant excuses for his behavior. Strong comedic young performer of any gender, to portray a toddler.

CHIRAG GUPTA Male
Greg’s quick-witted and wily classmate, who is enthusiastically engaged in a years-long prank-battle with Greg. Strong, comedic young performer with a powerful unchanged singing voice.

PATTY FARRELL Female
Ambitious, driven, and overachieving classmate of Greg. Always out to best him at every turn since he poured glitter-glue down her back in second grade, Patty sees success as the only destination. Strong, comedic young performer with a powerful singing voice.

FREGLEY Male

Greg’s deeply odd-ball classmate, who is sensitive to sugar and unapologetically interested in his own boogers. Strong, comedic young performer with a powerful, unchanged singing voice.

 

BRYCE ANDERSON Male
Dreamboat classmate of Greg’s, who enjoys unfettered adoration and popularity. Infamous for his cutting remarks and cute status. Bryce has hit his growth-spurt early and presents as more mature than many of his peers. Strong, comedic young performer and singer.

JOSHIE Female/Male (Female name "Jeanie")
European teen pop star and Rowley’s idol. A cross between a boy-band star and KidsBop performer, Joshie is obviously manufactured to make responsibility sound cool to 6-8 year old girls. His/Her motto: follow your dreams and respect your parents! Strong, comedic young performer and singer with pop chops.

CHRIS/CHRISTINE HOSEY & LIONEL/LEONA JAMES Female/Male
Two of the most unpopular and nerdy kids in Middle School. Strong, comedic young performer and singers.

PAULENE & YVETTE Females
Patty Farrell’s minions. They like what she likes and dislike whatever she dislikes – aka Greg.They are perfect in every way, but always look up to Patty. Strong, comedic young performer and singers.

CLAIRE Female

A ‘Wednesday Addams’-lite, goth-in-training middle schooler. Claire is the keeper of the lore of the Cheese Touch and takes it upon herself to make sure nobody starts the dreaded curse again. Strong, comedic young performer and singer

FRANK HEFFLEY Male. (could be played by a an actual Dad of a participating student or older brother!)
Greg’s put-upon father, who possesses an interest in U.S. history and a deep distrust of teenagers. Uncomfortable speaking with tweens, Frank is always trying to toughen Greg up and get him to “go be active,” perhaps in an effort to keep his son from following in his own wimpy footsteps. Strong, comedic performer and singer.

SUSAN HEFFLEY Female (Could be played by an actual Mom of a participating student or an older sister)
Greg’s chipper, loving, and overly-supportive mother, Susan is a former Pre-school teacher who is constantly looking for “teachable moments” with her boys. Though she always sees the best in her kids (sometimes blinding her to reality), she is also quick to become the household disciplinarian when necessary. Strong, comedic performer and singer.

 

MRS. CLAYTON. Female (Perfect role for a parent or older sibling of a participating student)
 Greg’s no-nonsense English teacher. Loves to host the Winter Talent Show every
year.

FREGLEY’S MOM Female (Perfect role for a parent or older sibling of a participating student)

A creepy, frail, and occasionally terrifying elderly woman. She could
be a ghost. Strong, comedic performer and singer

Finding Nemo Kids

Show and Character Descriptions

 

Disney’s Finding Nemo KIDS is a 30-minute musical adaptation of the beloved 2003 Pixar movie Finding Nemo, with new music by award-winning songwriting team Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez. Marlin, an anxious and over-protective clownfish, lives in the Great Barrier Reef with his kid Nemo, who longs to explore the world beyond their anemone home. But when Nemo is captured and taken to Sydney, Marlin faces his fears and sets off on an epic adventure across the ocean. With the help of lovable characters such as optimistic Dory, laid-back sea turtle Crush, and the supportive Tank Gang, Marlin and Nemo both overcome challenges on their journey to find each other and themselves.

Featuring memorable songs such as “Just Keep Swimming,” “Fish Are Friends Not Food,” and “Go With the Flow,” Finding Nemo KIDS brings a vibrant underwater world to life on stage in a story full of family, friendship, and adventure. This show is perfect for the youngest students and those who are also new to the stage. 

 

 

NEMO

A curious young clownfish who brims with excitement to explore the wonders that lie beyond the Great Barrier Reef. Born with a “lucky fin” – or what humans would call a limb difference – Nemo quickly learns that the world possesses incredible dangers in addition to the promise of big adventures. By making new friends, finding strength within, and practicing teamwork, Nemo transforms into a capable and brave leader, able to self-advocate and take on challenges big and small.

Marlin
An anxious clownfish and Nemo’s overprotective father who prefers the safety of his anemone to the frightening unknowns of the open ocean. As he travels across the sea in search of Nemo, Marlin develops the courage to face the unpredictable ocean and the wisdom to trust others – including his own kid.

Dory
An optimistic and bubbly blue tang, experiences frequent short-term memory loss and finds herself wandering through the ocean with no place to call home. Sparking friendships with whomever she meets, Dory immediately offers to help Marlin find his lost child, and the two set out on an adventurous journey through the ocean. Along the way, Dory’s kindness and bright spirit ease Marlin’s fears, and the unlikely duo finds comfort and family in each other. Look for a performer with great charisma and a stage presence that can light up a room.

Nigel, Sprit, Tiller & Jib
A knowledgeable pod of pelicans, are the show’s helpful narrators. These informative birds are responsible for conveying important plot points and must be played by enthusiastic actors with excellent diction and volume.

Sea Chorus
Functions as the general ensemble, creating the environment of the play and becoming the characters that Marlin and Dory interact with on their journey to Sydney. They will also help with the transitions from the Ocean to the Aquarium Tank. The Sea Chorus can be filled with any species of sea creatures you would like, but below are the featured roles that can emerge from this Ensemble:

TAD, a self-admittedly obnoxious butterflyfish who joins Sheldon in encouraging Nemo to swim past the Drop-Off

Professor Ray
A stingray and Nemo’s enthusiastic teacher, takes pride in sharing the curiosities and marvels of the world with the class and encourages every student to be a brave explorer.

Scuba Mask Dancer
A performer responsible for floating the diver’s mask through the water whenever it appears onstage. You can make this role’s choreography as complex or as simple as you like depending on your selected actor’s dance level and experience.

Bruce
An intimidating great white shark, is the sharks’ ringleader. Despite Bruce’s best efforts to adopt a vegetarian diet, Bruce loses control and is sent into a frenzy, threatening to devour every fish in sight.

Chum and Anchor
Two of Bruce’s shark friends, try to live vegetarian lifestyles but are eventually forced to restrain an out-of- control Bruce from eating innocent fish.

Bubbles
A yellow tang who is captivated by bubbles, is one of the first to welcome Nemo to the tank. This friendly fish exclusively uses the word “bubbles” to communicate.

Bloat
An open-minded and supportive blowfish, is proud to be part of the Tank Gang family and helps keep everyone’s spirits up, even when things seem bleak.

Gurgle
Frightened of strangers and the germs they carry with them, is a royal gramma who enjoys the safety and regulated cleanliness of the tank.

Peach
A mature and down-to-earth starfish, offers guidance and reassurance to all those who need it.

Gill
A relentless and inspiring leader who will stop at nothing to return to the freedom of the ocean. This Moorish idol fish believes in the Tank Gang and concocts countless plans to bust them out of the aquarium. Gill is the first fish Nemo has ever met with a similar “fin difference,” quickly becoming a mentor and inspiration for the young clownfish.

Sea Turtles & Sea Turtle Kids
Righteously mellow creatures featured in “Go With the Flow.”

CRUSH, a 150-year-old sea turtle who knows how to hang loose, teaches Marlin a thing or two about being a good parent. Look for a strong singer who can confidently belt “Go With the Flow” to make it a truly radical jam.

SQUIRT, offspring of Crush, fearlessly twirls through turbulent waters of the ocean and enjoys trying out cool new moves in the high- speed EAC.

KAI and BREEZE each have individual singing solos in “Go With the Flow.”

ELF JR.

Santa Claus
Santa Claus has a lot on his plate during the Christmas season, and it is starting to show. He is annoyed with the Elves, tired of lying to Buddy, and sad that people seem to be losing their Christmas spirit. He is still jolly old St. Nick underneath it all, but the job is getting to him. This is a great role for a character performer who can play an older, somewhat cranky man while trying to keep his holiday spirit.
Gender: Male | Vocal range: Bb3–D5

Buddy
Buddy is the perfect elf. He is good-natured, means well, and is happy all the time. There is only one problem: he is not an elf, he is an adult human. This role is ideal for a young man who is an excellent actor and good singer with energetic earnestness and strong comedic timing. It helps to cast an actor who is taller than the other Elves to differentiate Buddy and add to the humor of the show.
Gender: Male | Vocal range: B3–G5

Elves
The Elves are Santa’s special helpers who love making toys to meet their Christmas Eve deadline. These roles are great for younger performers or students who can embody youthful energy, enjoy singing, and work well together as a group.

Charlie
Charlie monitors the other Elves, making sure every present is wrapped and every bow is tied. Cast a young performer with a good speaking voice who is comfortable taking command of the stage and showing friendly authority over the rest of the Elves.
Gender: Male

Shawanda
Shawanda is a dependable and caring elf. She will do whatever she can to help others, including Buddy, even though she accidentally reveals that he is human. Cast a good actress with a clear speaking voice for this important story moment.
Gender: Female

Sam
Sam is one of Walter’s office staff members who is in a bind at the top of the show. A young performer with a good speaking voice and strong character choices will work well for this part.
Gender: Male

Walter Hobbs
Walter Hobbs, Buddy’s real father, is so focused on keeping his job that he is not making time for his family. He can be stern and unemotional, but ultimately learns to recommit to his family. Cast a great actor with strong authority who can also show Walter’s softer side.
Gender: Male | Vocal range: B3–E5

Deb
Deb, Walter’s secretary, has the big responsibility of keeping her boss and the office happy. She does this through a positive attitude and efficient work ethic. This is a great role for a young woman with pleasant energy, solid acting ability, and a good speaking voice.

Emily Hobbs
Emily Hobbs is Walter’s devoted wife who wishes he would spend more time at home. She is a problem solver and excellent mother who does everything she can to create a positive family dynamic. Cast an excellent actress and singer who conveys maturity and warmth.
Gender: Female | Vocal range: G3–D5

Michael Hobbs
Michael Hobbs is the smarter-than-average 12-year-old son of Walter and Emily. He quickly befriends Buddy and does everything he can to make sure Buddy becomes a permanent part of the family. Look for a solid young actor and singer with an unchanged voice.
Gender: Male | Vocal range: G3–D5

Security Guards
Security Guard #1 and Security Guard #2 are a stern duo from Walter’s office, making sure everyone who enters has permission. Cast a duo that works well together and fits the bill for a tough pair.
Gender: Any

Saleswoman
The Saleswoman is the first person to greet Buddy as he enters Macy’s. She is the consummate salesperson: smiling, overfriendly, and always trying to sell something. This is a great ensemble role for a young woman with limited stage experience.

Manager
The Manager is a terrific featured acting role for a performer with good comedic timing. As the manager of Macy’s, he is doing everything possible to keep the employees in line.

Jovie
Jovie works as a store elf at Macy’s, but she does not exactly radiate Christmas spirit. She is cynical, a bit tough around the edges, and the target of Buddy’s complete adoration. This is a fantastic role for a young woman with a strong singing voice and acting chops.

Santa's Helper
Santa’s Helper works as a Macy’s employee and announces when each kid gets to visit with Santa. This is a good ensemble role for a performer with a loud, clear voice.

Fake Santa
Fake Santa is a poor replacement for the real Santa. He is a Macy’s employee who is rough around the edges. Fake Santa should be played by a performer unafraid of being a little over the top and who has good physical control.

Policemen
Policeman #1 and Policeman #2 are a friendly pair of cops who return Buddy to the Hobbs household. These are perfect featured roles for two ensemble members.

Sarah
Sarah is a staff member at Walter’s office. This is a nice role for a less experienced actor with a good singing voice.
Gender: Female

Mr. Greenway
Mr. Greenway is one of the crankiest businessmen around. He is the big boss, so look for an older student with a commanding presence to tackle this acting role.
Gender: Male

Chadwick and Matthews
Chadwick and Matthews are staff members at Walter’s office who are doing everything they can to save the day and make their boss happy. Cast a pair of good character actors who work well together and can drive the action of scenes.

Charlotte Dennon
Charlotte Dennon is a TV reporter with a big personality. She does her best to keep her professional persona in public and does not like being shown up. This is a great role for a young woman with professional charisma and strong acting choices.

Finale Soloists
Finale Soloists #1, #2, #3, and #4 are good roles to highlight four of your strong solo singers.
Vocal range: B3–B4

Darlene Lambert and Emma Van Brocklin
Darlene Lambert and Emma Van Brocklin are on the scene in Central Park and are convinced of Santa’s magic after Buddy reveals their past Christmas gifts. Look for two young ladies with nice singing voices and some acting experience to take on these small but featured roles.
Gender: Female

Ensemble
The Ensemble includes New Yorkers, Comforting New Yorker, Macy’s Employees, Macy’s Employee #1, Members of the Rockefeller Crowd, Office Staff, Business Woman, Flyer Guys, Teenager, Jogger, Carolers, Passerby, Children, and Parents. These roles create the distinct worlds of the North Pole and New York City. They can all be double cast from your ensemble, and strong, specific character choices will make the story feel richer and more vivid.
