  • About This Survey

    This survey is structured around Te Pae Mahutonga, a Māori model of health promotion developed by Professor Tā Mason Durie. Te Pae Mahutonga ā€” named after the Southern Cross constellation ā€” provides a framework for understanding the conditions needed for Māori health and wellbeing. NZMSA has adopted Te Pae Mahutonga as its Advocacy Framework for 2026, with each of its six stars representing a key area of advocacy for medical tauira across Aotearoa.

  • The six advocacy themes:

    1. Mauriora: Cultural identity in medical school programmes
    2. Waiora: The medical education environment ā€” rising cohort numbers, the New Zealand Graduate School of Medicine, and clinical placements
    3. Toiora: The future medical workforce for healthy populations ā€” tauira perspectives on rural health and general practice (GP)
    4. Te Oranga: Student hauora in Aotearoa society ā€” financial hardship as a medical tauira
    5. Ngā Manukura: Medical student leadership ā€” tauira awareness of and expectations for NZMSA and Regional Medical Studentsā€™ Associations (RMSAs)
    6. Te Mana Whakahaere: Medical student autonomy ā€” broader advocacy views and opinions

  • Acknowledgements
    This survey was developed by the NZMSA Vice President of Advocacy in collaboration with the NZMSA Advocacy Rōpū. NZMSA acknowledges the partnership and contributions of Te Oranga, our partner national Māori medical tauira association, in shaping the advocacy themes and questions reflected in this survey.

  • How your data will be used
    All data collected through this survey will be used by NZMSA, Te Oranga, and our partnering RMSAs to inform and drive advocacy mahi on behalf of medical tauira across Aotearoa. The RMSAs are:

    • Auckland University Medical Studentsā€™ Association (AUMSA)
    • Otago University Medical Studentsā€™ Association (OUMSA)
    • Dunedin Medical Studentsā€™ Association for Advanced Learning in Medicine (DMSAA)
    • Christchurch Medical Studentsā€™ Association (CMSA)
    • Wellington Health Professional Studentsā€™ Association (WHPSA)

    Results will be published in the 2026 NZMSA National Survey Report and may be used to inform submissions to universities, health sector stakeholders, and the government.

  • Participation, confidentiality, andĀ koha
    This survey is open to all medical tauira enrolled at Waipapa Taumata Rau (University of Auckland) and Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka (University of Otago). Participation is entirely voluntary, and all responses are anonymised.

    Each tauira may complete this survey once only. To recognise your time and contribution, all tauira who complete the survey will be entered into a draw to win grocery vouchers as koha. Additionally, the campus or clinical site with the highest proportion of tauira completing the survey will receive a pizza party!
