• Sign on to the Initial Bargaining Demands

We, the undersigned Postdoctoral Scholars at the University of Washington, present the bargaining demands for our successor agreement. These demands were developed from conversations and bargaining survey responses from hundreds of members and are intended to improve equity at UW and advance the mission of the University to serve the public through research, education, and public service.

Compensation and Workload: Increase compensation and support to match Postdoc research experience and reflect the high housing and relocation costs in order to recruit and retain a diverse workforce that keeps UW a top-tier institution.

Appointment Security and Length: Improve appointment security and appointment notice policies to match research needs and to remove the burden and delays of visa renewal for international Postdocs.

Benefits, Leave, Family and Dependent Care: Ensure access to benefits for all Postdocs, regardless of fellowship status. Expand leave options and ensure Postdocs receive payout or transfer of unused time off. Promote gender equity by increasing caregiver support, and ensuring all Postdocs have paid family leave.

International Postdocs: Provide financial aid for visa costs, paid leave for visa- and immigration-related appointments, support for moving to the US including campus housing access, and free tax and legal assistance. Improve funding opportunities for scholars from international and underrepresented communities to increase diversity and better support groundbreaking research.

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion: Stop discrimination, harassment, and bullying by supporting the EPIC peer-led training and expanding programs to improve campus climate, recruit & support underrepresented groups, and expand education and training on countering intersectional forms of oppression.

Environmental Sustainability: Continue to provide free access to local public transportation. Implement other practices that promote sustainability and environmental justice, and protect Postdocs against hazards brought on by climate change. Include Postdocs on decision-making bodies for UW sustainability initiatives.

Career Development: Increase career development resources and improve effectiveness and accountability of mentors.

Maintain all other existing terms of the Postdoc Collective Bargaining Agreement not addressed above. These demands may result in the change to any or all Articles in the Contract and the possible addition of provisions.
