Jotform’s Canvas LMS integration lets you connect your forms directly to your Canvas environment to simplify student onboarding and course management. Each form submission can automatically create or update users and manage course enrollments, reducing manual work and helping keep your records up to date.
What You Need for This Setup
- Canvas LMS Domain — This is the web address for your Canvas instance.
- Client ID — This is the unique identifier assigned to your Canvas developer key.
- Client Secret — This is the API key secret generated for your Canvas developer key and paired with its client ID.
For steps on getting your client ID and client secret, check out the Getting Your Canvas Client ID and Client Secret section below.
Connecting Your Canvas Account
Getting your form ready to integrate with Canvas by Instructure only takes a few steps. Here’s how to get started:
- In Form Builder, in the orange navigation bar at the top of the page, click on Settings.
- Then, in the menu on the left side of the page, click on Integrations.
- Now, in the Search bar at the top of the Integrations section on the right, enter Canvas.
- Next, in the search results, click on Canvas by Instructure.
- In the Canvas by Instructure section, select one of these actions:
- Create Student — This creates a new student in Canvas using your form submission data.
- Create Enrollment — This enrolls a student in a Canvas course or course section based on the details collected from your form.
- Then, click on Next.
- Now, enter your Canvas LMS domain, client ID, and client secret in the corresponding input boxes.
- Then, click on Authenticate.
- Next, in the Log in to Canvas window that comes up, log in to your Canvas account.
- Then, in the Canvas App Login window, click on Authorize to grant Jotform Integration access to your account.
- If you’ve logged in before through one of your other forms, select that Canvas account from the Account Dropdown menu and then click on Authenticate.
- Or, to use a different one, click on Use Another Account.
That’s it. You’ve successfully authenticated your Canvas account, and your form is now connected to it. Depending on the action you selected, you’ll see the settings for:
- Creating student records from form submissions
- Enrolling students in a course or course section from form submissions
Pro Tip
You can use the same or different Canvas accounts for each integration action and each form in your account. This lets you create student records or enroll students in different Canvas accounts using the same form, or in the same Canvas account from different forms.
Setting Up Integration Actions
Once your Canvas account is authenticated, you can set up the actions that determine what happens after your form is submitted. Each action lets you automatically create student records in Canvas using the information submitted through your form or enroll students in Canvas courses or course sections.
Configuring the Create Student Action
While you’re in the Canvas by Instructure section of Integrations under the Settings tab in Form Builder, you can continue setting up the action to create students in Canvas in just a few steps. Here’s what to do:
- In the column for your form under Match Your Fields, click on the Dropdown menu on the right side of Login ID (email) in the Canvas LMS column, then select the field from your form that matches it.
- To map additional fields, click on Add Field at the bottom of the Match Your Fields section.
- Then, click on the Dropdown menu that appears in the Canvas LMS column and select a field from your Canvas account.
- Next, on the right side of it, click on the Dropdown menu in the column for your form to select the field that matches it.
- To remove fields, click on the ✕ on the right side of the Dropdown menu in the column for your form.
- Once everything’s set, click on Save.
That’s it. You’ve successfully created a Create Student action.
Now, a new student record will be created in Canvas whenever your form is submitted.
Configuring the Course Enrollment Action
While you’re in the Canvas by Instructure section of Integrations under the Settings tab in Form Builder, you can configure which Canvas course or course section students are enrolled in from form submissions. Here’s how to set it up:
- In the column for your form under Match Your Fields, click on the Dropdown menu on the right side of Course ID in the Canvas LMS column, then select the field from your form that matches it.
- Next, on the right side of User ID or Email Address in the Canvas LMS column, click on the Dropdown menu in the column for your form, then select the field from your form that matches it.
That’s it. You’ve successfully created a Course Enrollment action.
Now, a student will be enrolled in the selected Canvas course or course section whenever your form is submitted.
Notes
- You can create multiple actions of the same or different types within the same form. The Add New Action button in the top-right corner of the All Actions section lets you add another one.
- Make a test submission on your form to test the action you’ve set. Interested in learning how to view the status of your action runs? Check out the Viewing Action Logs section below.

Deleting Actions
You can delete a Canvas by Instructure integration action to remove it permanently. This helps keep your integration setup clean and organized. Here’s a quick how-to:
- While you’re in the All Actions section, hover your mouse over the action you want to delete, and then click on the Three Dots icon on the right side of it.
- In the menu that comes up, select Delete Action.
