FAQ
What does Form 1099-DIV report?
Form 1099-DIV, Dividends and Distributions, reports dividends and other distributions paid on stock, including ordinary and qualified dividends, capital gain distributions, nondividend distributions and liquidation distributions. It also shows any federal income tax withheld and foreign tax paid.
Who needs to issue a 1099-DIV?
Corporations, mutual funds, brokers and other payers generally issue Form 1099-DIV to each person they paid dividends or distributions to during the year, once payments reach the reporting threshold. Payers must also file one if they withheld backup withholding or foreign tax, regardless of the amount. The current instructions list the thresholds for each type of payment.
What's the difference between box 1a and box 1b?
Box 1a shows total ordinary dividends. Box 1b shows the portion of that amount that counts as qualified dividends, which may be taxed at lower capital gains rates. Box 1b is part of box 1a, not an additional amount, which is a common point of confusion for recipients.
When do I have to send Form 1099-DIV?
Recipients generally need their copy by January 31. The IRS copy is generally due by the end of February for paper filers and March 31 for electronic filers. Brokers and funds sometimes follow different rules for consolidated statements, so check the current instructions.
How do I fill out a 1099-DIV form?
Start with the payer's name, address and TIN, then the recipient's TIN, name and address. Enter total ordinary dividends in box 1a and the qualified portion in box 1b. Capital gain distributions go in box 2a, with any special gain categories in boxes 2b through 2f.
Fill in nondividend distributions, federal tax withheld, section 199A dividends, foreign tax paid and liquidation distributions as they apply, then finish with any exempt-interest dividends and state tax information.
Does Jotform file my 1099-DIV with the IRS?
No. Jotform lets you fill out Form 1099-DIV for free and download or print the completed PDF. You can give that PDF to recipients, but paper filing with the IRS requires the official scannable Copy A, or you can e-file through the IRS or a provider.
