FAQ
What is Form 1099-MISC?
Form 1099-MISC, Miscellaneous Information, is an information return businesses use to report certain payments they made during the year. Common examples include rents, royalties, prizes and awards, medical and health care payments, payments to attorneys, and other income.
Since the 2020 tax year, payments for services from nonemployees such as freelancers are reported on Form 1099-NEC instead.
Who has to send a 1099-MISC?
If you pay someone in the course of your trade or business and the payments reach the reporting threshold for a box on the form, you generally need to file a 1099-MISC. Thresholds differ by box (royalties, for example, have a much lower threshold than rents) and have changed in recent years, so check the current instructions before you file.
Payments made for personal purposes, like paying a landlord for your own home, don't need to be reported.
When is Form 1099-MISC due?
Recipients generally need their copy by January 31. If you report amounts in box 8 or box 10, the recipient deadline moves to mid-February. The IRS copy is generally due by the end of February if you file on paper, or March 31 if you file electronically. Confirm the exact dates in the current instructions.
Can I file the Copy A I print from Jotform with the IRS?
No. The IRS only accepts paper Copy A on the official red-ink scannable form, or you can file electronically. The PDF you download from Jotform is great for recipient copies (Copy B and Copy 2), your own records (Copy C) and state filing where accepted.
How do I fill out a 1099-MISC form?
Start with the payer's name, address, phone number and TIN, then add the recipient's TIN, name and address. Enter an account number if you use one to track multiple 1099s for the same person.
Next, fill in the amounts in the boxes that match the type of payment, such as rents in box 1 or royalties in box 2, plus any federal or state income tax you withheld. Leave the other boxes blank.
Is my 1099-MISC information secure on Jotform?
Yes. Jotform uses 256-bit SSL encryption to protect your data as it's submitted, and you can enable encrypted forms for extra security. The service is free to use, and you can download your finished 1099-MISC as a PDF right away.
