FAQ
What is Form 2848?
Form 2848, Power of Attorney and Declaration of Representative, authorizes an eligible individual to represent you before the IRS. Depending on the authority you grant, your representative can receive and inspect your confidential tax information, talk with the IRS for you, and sign certain agreements, consents, and waivers.
Who can I name as my representative?
Your representative must be eligible to practice before the IRS, such as an attorney, certified public accountant, or enrolled agent. Part II lists the designations, and some of them, like unenrolled return preparers, come with limited authority.
What's the difference between Form 2848 and Form 8821?
Form 2848 lets someone represent you and act on your behalf. Form 8821, Tax Information Authorization, only lets a person or organization see your tax information. It doesn't allow them to represent you or speak for you with the IRS.
How do I fill out Form 2848?
In Part I, enter your name, address, and taxpayer identification number, then list each representative with their CAF number, PTIN, and contact details. On line 3, describe the tax matters, form numbers, and years or periods the authorization covers. Lines 4 through 6 cover specific uses, additional acts you authorize or restrict, and whether to keep prior powers of attorney in effect.
You sign line 7, and each representative signs the declaration in Part II. Be specific on line 3: general phrases like "all years" or "all taxes" aren't accepted.
Can my spouse and I use one Form 2848?
No. Even if you filed a joint return and want the same representative, each spouse needs to complete a separate Form 2848.
How do I send Form 2848 to the IRS?
Once the form is signed, you can submit it through the IRS website, or fax or mail it to the IRS office listed in the instructions. Jotform helps you fill out the form and download the PDF for free, but it doesn't send the form to the IRS for you.
