If I get approval as a nonprofit but do not go over the free plan limits in a month, is the service free for that month?

When you will get approval as a nonprofit, prices for paid subscriptions for your account will be 50% off. That is, if you will decide to upgrade to the desired paid plan, you will be able to do that with half of the price compared to the regular account.

You can stay on a free plan as far as you want and it's not mandatory to upgrade to the paid plan once approved for non-profit discount. However, once you will upgrade to the paid plan, and select a monthly payment schedule, for example, you will be always charged whether you go over free plan limits in a month or not. 

Please also note that subscription can be canceled and re-upgraded anytime. Thus, if you will upgrade to the monthly payment schedule and realize that for the next month you don't need paid plan limits, for instance, you can cancel the subscription so you won't be charged for the next month. Afterward, you can upgrade to the paid plan again when needed.
