Form 1099-MISC, Miscellaneous Information, is an information return that businesses use to report certain payments made in the course of a trade or business. The payer prepares the form; it is not completed by the recipient. Use the current IRS form and instructions for the tax year you are reporting.
What is Form 1099-MISC?
Form 1099-MISC reports certain miscellaneous payments. It is different from Form 1099-NEC, which generally reports nonemployee compensation. Review the payment type before choosing a form.
Common reportable categories can include rent, royalties, prizes and awards, medical and health care payments, and certain attorney payments. The payer prepares and furnishes the form to the recipient and files the required copy with the IRS.
When do you need to file Form 1099-MISC?
File Form 1099-MISC only for reportable payments made in the course of your trade or business. For payments made in 2026, the reporting threshold is generally $10 for royalties and broker payments in lieu of dividends or tax-exempt interest; $600 for gross proceeds paid to attorneys; and $2,000 for many other categories, including rents, prizes and awards, other income, medical and health care payments, and crop insurance proceeds. Fishing boat proceeds are generally reportable regardless of the amount paid. Direct sales of consumer products for resale generally have a $5,000 reporting threshold.
Do not use Form 1099-MISC simply because you paid an independent contractor. Non-employee compensation is generally reported on Form 1099-NEC.
What you need before filling out Form 1099-MISC
Gather the required payer, recipient, and payment information before you begin. Having complete records makes it easier to choose the correct reporting box, avoid errors, and meet filing requirements.
- Payer name, address, phone number, and TIN
- Recipient name, address, and TIN
- The payment amount and correct category
- Federal or state income tax withheld, if any
- Payment records that support the amount reported
Use Form W-9 when appropriate to request a U.S. recipient’s taxpayer identification number. Check the recipient’s identifying information before filing to reduce correction and backup-withholding issues. Once you have gathered and verified this information, you are ready to enter it in the appropriate fields and boxes on Form 1099-MISC.

How to fill out Form 1099-MISC
Step 1: Enter payer and recipient information
Complete the payer section with your business details and TIN. Then enter the recipient’s legal name, address, and TIN based on your records. Use the account-number field only when it applies.
Step 2: Report each payment in the correct box
Choose the box that matches the payment category. Common boxes include rents, royalties, other income, federal income tax withheld, fishing boat proceeds, medical and health care payments, direct sales, crop insurance proceeds, and gross proceeds paid to an attorney. Do not combine unrelated payments in one box.
Step 3: Enter any federal income tax withheld
Report federal income tax withheld under the backup-withholding rules in the appropriate box. A filing requirement can apply regardless of the normal payment threshold when federal income tax was withheld.
Step 4: Complete state information when required
When state reporting applies, complete the state income tax withheld, state identification number, and state amount fields as directed by the current form and applicable state rules.
Step 5: Furnish and file the required copies
Review the current IRS instructions for recipient-statement and IRS deadlines. Under the current instructions, Form 1099-MISC is generally due to the IRS by February 28 if you file on paper or March 31 if you file electronically. Businesses that file 10 or more information returns in aggregate during the calendar year generally must file electronically. The IRS offers the Information Returns Intake System (IRIS) for eligible e-filing workflows.

Simplify your Form 1099-MISC filing process
Form 1099-MISC can help businesses report qualifying miscellaneous payments accurately, but the correct form, reporting threshold, payment box, and filing deadline all depend on the details of the payment. Before you file, verify the recipient’s information, review your records, and confirm that Form 1099-MISC, rather than Form 1099-NEC, applies to the payment.
